Right now on my home server I have a 3x2TB RAIDZ1 with 4TB usable space. I have approx. 1TB left to use, so I'm beginning to look at expanding the volume.
My question is this: Should I add another vdev of 3x2TB drives, or simply add drives to the existing vdev? Also, as I'm not sure off the top of my head - can you do a live migration from a RAIDZ1 to a RAIDZ2?
Since this is not uber-critical data (most important thing is the volume holds image backups of all machines in my house. So, while important not the most critical thing in the world) I'm not looking to have the best possible solution of redundancy, but 6 drives does make me uneasy.
So, like I said - looking for suggestions on expanding this ZFS pool. I'd be open to buying up to 3 drives at once for this expansion.
