What if... we have soooo much data? - Page 2

There are lots of alternative file managers to windows explorer with lots of options as to how you look at your data. I've actually found Macs and Linux to be better for this kind of software, but I don't really see a need for it yet anyway.

Have you tried out a spotlight equivalent? Those can be a lot of fun... Windows+space, "holiday 12", right arrow, magic!

Just a reality check, but there are clear mathematical limits to the rate of (lossless) data compression...though for lossy compression, the theories are less definitive. It's less understood what the correct measure for "error" is, in a sense, also how much you can get away with. Granted, there is a reasonably-good understanding of how good lossy audio encodes need to be, lossy video compression needs to be, etc.

Check the work of Claude Shannon: information theory, rate distortion theory, and so on, what the state of those fields are today.

Also, let's not confuse media container formats with media codecs.

True. But 15-20 years ago, people laughed when you had a HDD of 232MB smile.gif It's huge and can never be filled...

Nowadays a freaking nvidia driver is almost that size tongue.gif

But anyway it seems I'm the only one wondering about this tongue.gif (that's why I started the thread tongue.gif)
