Four dead HDD's.

Thread Starter
Yup I got boned really good today, plugged in a bad connector from my PSU that distributed power to my four HDD's via the Corsair SATA PCB in the 800D and it fried all my HDD's apparently.

I took them out and tried each individual and no go, nothing powers up. What can I do to get my data back? Can I replace the logic board on my four Samsung Spinpoint F3 103SJ and bring my drives back to life?

I really can't suffer through these four HDD failures, I have too much data too lose. If anyone has any advice please assist.

I hope they're not all dead..If so..the pcb on them is probably what's fried..You can take a pcb off of a working one..(same model) and stick it on a dead one...It might work..Then you'll have to have drives to copy to redface.gif

I have a couple spares drives to copy too, I always have memory lying around I just hate that I lost four HDD's in the process. AHHHH! Frustration to the MAX!

I can go out a buy the same model but I would like someone to confirm that the logic board swap will work for the Samsung Spinpoint F3 103SJ.

Along with the fact that I have an SSD (boot drive) and the other HDD's were main drives for data such as music, pictures and other irreplaceable information. I NEED IT BACK!

You can try to swap the PCBs, but remember that they may need to be exact down to the firmware.
If you can't find a compatable PCB, there is the always uber expensive option of data recovery services:

Don't think I'll use a data recovery service because they charge astronomically from what I understand, did some snooping. Used a multi-meter, the 5v and 12v diodes read a 100-190 using a 200 ohm range and the 5v fuse had a -1 or 1 running through it (but this is always displayed on the multimeter so it seems my fuse is the problem).

Any experts out there that may assist? I tried this because of toms hardware, had a similar dilemma.

Tried to get a quote from those data recovery places, $700-$2700 recovery. I can't believe how much they charge.

Here is a possible solution I found but I'm sort of skeptical. :/

"I've the same problem as you with my samsung F3 HD103SJ
I think I cause this problem by connecting the supply plug reversed

So I removes the two large TVS chips (near the Sata connector) by using a cutter
also removed the 0 ohm resistor using soldering iron (near the Sata connector 5V leg) and instead of the zero ohm resistor I solder a small short wire.

and that it I fixed my disk now it works OK

Thanks to all in this forum"..

Wow, nice work man! thumb.gif

Wait, 'using a cutter"? I hope he's not referring to using a box knife to remove a surface mounted component. I can't imagine it would work once you soldered a new one on there. I suppose if you were very careful not to cut into the board, or ruin any pads, you might be ok. Let us know how it goes please!

I'm not trying this method yet, I'll need a new drive regardless so I'm going to try and find an identical 103SJ (hopefully from 2011) at a near by Microcenter. If no luck I'll need to do some hunting online, maybe I can find a similar drive on here from someone.

A logic board swap might be my best route.
