Need suggestions for a good gaming headset... $200 budget

Firstly this is 100% purely for Gaming and Skype, Nothing else, budget is $200 but i entertain anything (In short, Who says i gotta spend $200)

Currently I have a Logitech G930 and I'm not that happy with it, the sound quality of it is pretty decent, and the wireless is nice, but its already cracking and falling apart (I've only had it since christmas and I take very good care of my stuff) the drivers are crap (constantly refuse to load correctly on me leading to spending 10 minutes trying to get them load everytime i plug the effing thing in) It also has an annoying tendency to be fairly monaural at times, As in only getting audio from the right earcup with some sources (Even though mono should technically be the -left- earcup) unless i flip on the fake surround sound... And it feels like im constantly plugging the dumb thing in to recharge the on board battery... Overall, its just not working for me and its more annoying than anything (And i know that the "monoaural" thing is a known bug with some things, I know of the workaround, I just dont want to do the workaround, and it doesnt change the other things)

Before this I had a Megalodon, Which was really nice, very comfortable and that, but the volume control was hard to use and i had to have the volume maxed out on it to hear anything it seemed, it also really lacked any low-end

I have a Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium HD sound card, I also have an ASUS Xonar D2 I can swap in (because the Titanium HD only has stereo analog outs..) and I'm also perfectly fine with something that plugs into USB... In short, I'm not too picky what it plugs into wink.gif

As for stereo vs "5.1" or "7.1" I dont really care, I've not heard any of the "fake" stuff work very well and generally used the Megalodon in 2.1 mode, the G930 I'm basically FORCED to use the fake 7.1 most of the time because otherwise, i only have audio from the right earcup

I WAS considering the Razer Tiamat 7.1, But I havn't really been thrilled with the reviews I'm seeing enough to plunk $180 on it... I tried looking but I figured I should ask all of you what you think..

I'm currently using the Corsair HS1. Been using it for over a year now, pretty much since its release and have no issues. Not to mention Corsair's warranty is top notch so I am covered if anything does go wrong. I believe the headsets have a 2 year warranty.

They have released a newer revised model for the HS1 which is the Corsair Vengeance 1500. If you want wireless you can also take a look at the Corsair Vengeance 2000. Both are solid headsets that match your stated budget and gets a personal recommendation from me. Three other close friends of mine also use the same headset and have been happy with them.

Or maybe i should just dig out my Zalman mic and go back to what i had before all the "specific" gaming headsets..my good ol HD280s.... the only thing i hated was the fact there was NO mute button on it so i had to mute the thing in windows, which is kinda annoying to me...no volume control except for windows that way too which is again, annoying...

if i go by the thread of whats -generally- recommended it sounds like that might be what i should do... I dunno...

If you want a the best headset go for the sennheiser PC 360. I have read a lot of reviews and couldn't find one bad thing about it ( except for the price, but it's in your budget ). It would also be good because you have a sound card and you will get awesome sound out of it. As for USB headset's I don't recommend them. I have a Logitech G35 myself and am having the same problems as you. And the sound quality is not that great either. At least compared to analog headset's.

require mic? if yes then PC 360 (open) or PC 350 (close)

without mic? HD 598 or HD 558

or DT 990 pro,

had G930 before, and upgraded to HD 558 and lovin it, it's very comfortable and have a big soundstage, excellent for movies and gaming, good for music too, basically an all around headphone

Sennheiser PC360. I have one and i LOVE it. Its verry comfy (i can wear it for hours without any issues), sound is good with my sound card (X-FI titanium fatality).
The microphone works excellent. I use teamspeak alot and never had any complaints.
Movies are good, music, teamspeak, skype and ofcourse gaming. The only downside i find is the cable, i wish it was braided (can be fixed if i find the time).

If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask.

Funny enough before i got the Titanium HD I was going to get that Asus sound card with the PC360 bundled with it..struggled to justify the cost (Silly i know) but then it was out of stock, i was in a hurry to get my rig up and running so i grabbed the X-Fi instead, and next thing i knew it was discontinued frown.gif

Sadly Newegg seems to have stopped carrying it, Amazon still has the PC360 and PC350 however($210 and $150 respectively..), though i was kinda intending to do it at Newegg it doesnt seem like they have anything im very interested in, Always was a fan of Sennheiser stuff...I used to use the aforementioned HD-280s plugged into an audio receiver(which was used as a glorified volume control) until i just couldnt spare the deskspace anymore... which resulted in the path down messing with headsets (Carcharias which i remember being great till i broke the volume control, Megalodon which was pretty good until for some reason they lost their "oomph" and the G930 which actually might make me happy if it would just work right) No question the 280s were the best in terms of audio quality however....

-edit- I think I'm leaning towards the 350 or 360, $200 was really pushing the top end of the budget, the 350s are a more reasonably-priced option... Debating on open VS closed

Oh and for music I have Grado SR125s, I also still have my superb HD280s which i use for quiet Xbox 360 time smile.gif I have too many headphones lol

Open vs. closed is a tricky question. On one side the open ones have velour instead of fake leather, are open so you won't get hot ears and have a better feeling of sound (fells almost like speakers). On the other hand people around you can hear what you are hearing and you can hear them. So isolation is not great. It really comes down to what you want from a headset and what you prefer. thumb.gif
