$750 home server build

Thread Starter
hi, i am going to build a home server but im not sure exactly what to get. i will not be needing a mouse keyboard or monitor in the $750. i would like to use an i3, a ssd for the os (160gb min required) and i would like to use the fractal define r4 case. the hdd should be 2tb 6gb/s and ready for raid 5 because i will be buying a raid controller in the future. i would like the $50 for the os to be included in the price, the psu should at least be modular and hopefully 80+ certified. i would like 8gb of ram and the cheap but good cooler master hyper 212 plus heatsink.

What do you guys suggest?

And what will this server be doing...

It is impossible to spec out a computer, especially a server without knowing the answer to this question.

Why does the SSD have to be 160GB or greater? If you're going with WHS2011 theres a trick that you can do to install on the drives smaller than 160GB.

An SSD will get trashed around alot on a home server, I wouldn't recommend it but its your choice.

If you are using WHS2011, you need to make sure that you have no more than 8GB RAM.

is the Hyper 212+ necessary? I am building a server with similar specs (i3, 8GB memory, WHS 2011) I personally think that if the CPU isn't overclockable, Don't get a new cooler unless the stock doesn't work and/or doesn't cool well.

I'd say that you should definitely be fine with the stock cooler. If you are concerned about power I'd say an i3-2120T would be good at only 35W and then run an Antec 450W Platinum PSU. For the RAM you could go with the Samsung 1.35V 8GB kit, it will save power (not very much but every little bit counts). For the mechanical hard drives you can get either 3Gbps or 6Gbps drives, won't matter. As for the SSD as the boot drive a 60GB is the max I would put in, WHS 2011 only uses about 25GBs if I remember correctly and the rest is setup as a data partition.
