Any other solution than a HTPC?

Thread Starter
Hello,

I watch a lot of video on various sites (mostly anime). I currently watch on my desktop, (22" screen). I want to be able to watch on my 50" TV in my living room. These are the things i want it to do:
- Netflix
- Watch Streaming video from a variety of internet websites
- browse web.

I do not need it for a file server, playing any movies i ripped, ect.

My TV has an open HDMI port.. I would like to be able to output the sound to my receiver (old one, only has RCA type connectors and component). Can i just use a mini audio port to RCA splitter?

here is what im planning to buy for it. I not specifically requesting feedback on the parts but i would always accept feedback if you feel like it.

If you dont want to build an HTPC, take a look at the Roku 2 XD. does netflix, Hulu, and other streaming sites. You can stream content from another computer on your TV with it, or us the SD slot. its a really cheap alternative thats worth looking at. i have one.

If your TV has MHL input you can also get a Roku Streaming Stick.

http://www.roku.com/streamingstick

Another option is WD's TV Live settop box which people seem to like

And if you do build an HTPC, consider going for the AMD A8-3870K or even waiting for Trinity if you're not building anytime soon. The i3 and 6450 will work, just letting you know an alternative you can use.

Like other members mentioned... media streamers can fulfill your current requirements for less than $100.

The advantage of a HTPC is that you do not depend on company support and basically will always be compatible with everything.

I can say from having the WD TV for the past 8 months that it does 1080P pretty well, and will passthrough the HD audio to my sound system via digital optical cable ( I know you aren't doing that know, just fyi for the future). The only complaint I have about it, is that I can't quit the netflix app and go back to browsing my server for video files. I have to restart the unit to get back to main menu. It might be that there is some button not working right as I did ditch the stock remote, and programed my logitech harmony.
