Upgrading my GPU...Will a R7850 work for me?

Hello All,

I used to be up on my hardware but much as changed the last few years so I want to run some things by you if you dont mind. First here are my specs:

Asus P6t deluxe v2
Intel i7 920 @ Stock
6GB DDR3 1600 @stock
XION 1000W PSU XON-1000P14HE
Antec 1200 Case
60GB Corsair SSD (OS)
560GB HDD (Programs)
2TB HDD (Data)
Blu-RAY CD ROM and DVD Burner

EVGA GTX280 (runs 2 monitors)
Radeon X1050(runs 1 monitor)

3 x Asus 24" LED @ 1920x1080
1 32" TV

Now I want to rebuild my PC by Summer 2013 but my current GPU setup is not working for me. I am looking for a single GPU now priced as close to $250 as possible that is on Amazon. Here are my wants/needs. Im already counting nvidia out as I would need SLI or a 600 series and thats not possible. Im assuming an R7850 will work for me.

I would like to run all three of my monitors and my TV from one card while in Windows. I work from home alot and I would like to use all 3 monitors in 1920x 1080 and have my TV playing Video.

While gaming, I would like to run eyefinity where possible. Im mainly trying to play TF2, Skyrim, GTA4, BF3, The Witcher 2 and SC2. I do not need ulra high max settings. I would like to run in the "high" settings with good frames, and if some games need to go a little lower thats fine. I would at least expect to run Skyrim better than an Xbox if possible. Im not concerned with having the TV in use while gaming, but if thats possible then so be it.

And thats it! I just want everything on one card so I dont need to unplug things all the time, or waste space running another lesser card just to push video to a TV or third monitor.

My questions are:

1. Will a R7850 work for me? Is the MSI R7850 Twin Frozr OC a good card?
2. Is there anything Cheaper that would work? Is it worth it to go cheaper?
3. Is there anything else I should consider? I know my MB is not PCI 3.0, CPU is old to todays standards, but like I said I want to rebuild by next summer. By then I would either put another R7850 in crossfire or replace all together if money permits.

"edit" 4. All three monitors have HDMI but the TV is only HDMI and VGA. Am I ok with 1 monitor on DVI, one on HDMI and the other two with DP to HDMI Adapters?

Your CPU is older, but still extremely capable. The only real advantage sandy or ivy has is efficiency (pcie 3.0 too for the record, but saturating 2.0 isn't easy). If I were you, I would overclock cpu to 3.6, or 3.8 and throw a $300 7950 in it and be done. Don't bother overclocking CPU until you get a decent cooler though, Coolermaster hyper 212, or evo at the very least, noctua d14 if u can afford it. There is a 920 oc guide in the intel cpu section that I have used. It is very helpful. Best of luck! thumb.gif

OP as said here for playing in eyefinity a HD 7950 is the minimum card I would consider. This will be above your budget. But thats the way it is. For Eyefinity gaming with decent settings I wouldn't go any lower than HD 7950 OC. Your CPU is very good. Get a good cooler and overclock your CPU to 3.6 Ghz . With this setup you could definitely run till the GTX 800 or HD 9000 cards launch in early 2014 .

I have no issue OC the CPU in the near future. I have a prolimatech megahalems cooler. I was running @ 3.4 but reset it as i had little time for PC gaming and figured it was a waste to keep it running that high with little use.

I know spending a few more $ and being done with it sounds like the best case, but Im on a strict budget and im moving this month. If i put this off for another few months to get something a little nicer I wont do it (birthday is on tuesday and GF is giving me $100for this plus I have $50 to amazon. so I dont want to spend more than $250.

Also ill need DP adapters to HDMI. What is the difference with passive and active? and will passive work for my scenario above?

Thanks

OK well i planned to shop around more tomorrow as i didnt expect to be up this late (mars rover!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) but thanks for this. I would get the TD card as I can always use the amazon GC for someting else. Here is my question. Is a 7950 going to be that much better than a 7850? If I decide to not rebuild next summer (if it aint broke dont fix?) then can i get another 7850 then for crossfire? Will that then be better than a 7950?

And thanks.

In short, 2 7850's will destroy a single 7950 even with pcie 2.0

If this is the case then this is my plan. and Im totally OK with "ok" eyefinity setup untill then. I know I have a budget, there will always be something worse and something better thumb.gif

So here is my next concern that was not addressed:

Can I run the 3 monitors 5760 x 1080 at once with the TV off if necessary, then switch to a desktop mode when im just pusing Word, outlook, chrome, itunes, etc to the three monitors and vlan to my tv? And can I do this without having to unplug things on the back of my pc when I want to switch?

I assume I would need two ACTIVE mini display ports to either DVI or HDMI (does it even matter- here is my monitors http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236102)

So it looks like on top of the card im another $50 in for adapters.

Oh and tiger direct estimates the card will get here september 16th lol.
