My 7mm end mill(s) came in the mail today. They sent me 2 when I ordered one. I've been getting a lot of bonus stuff from businesses lately. I have 9 more of the on/off PCBs that are sitting around collecting dust that I will sell. I ordered 1, they sent my 10. The ALPs PCB I ordered 1, they sent me 6, and so I have 4 extra (my math isn't wrong, I just put the silk screen on the wrong side and had to remove the potentiometer from the board and flip it around, so I just used a new board).

It's a nice project, I'm a big fan of tube amps, I just never seem to get them to a point where I'm absolutely happy, but I guess that's just me smile.gif

Anyway, sounds like you got luck on your side with the nice extra endmills, pcbs etc smile.gif

I updated some posts elsewhere and on my own blog. It's finished. I got tired of waiting to figure out powder coating and machining, so here are a bunch of pics split up by date. I'd like to get some better pictures of it. All I have is a smartphone camera. and outdoor for lighting.

Mounting the on/off PCB:

2012-10-24_19-17_thumb.jpg2012-10-24_19-19_thumb.jpg2012-10-24_19-20_thumb.jpg

Getting everything mounted, but not wired yet:

2012-10-25_18-44_thumb.jpg

Finished:

2012-10-27_16-21-18_thumb.jpg2012-10-27_16-21-35_thumb.jpg2012-10-27_16-21-54_thumb.jpg2012-10-27_16-22-03_thumb.jpg2012-10-27_16-49-46_thumb.jpg2012-10-27_16-50-16_thumb.jpg2012-10-27_16-51-07_thumb.jpg2012-10-27_16-51-42_thumb.jpg2012-10-27_16-52-15_thumb.jpg

When I got it all together and powered on the tubes heated up like they should but I heard no sound. I went to test the high voltage line for the plates and got nothing. Ready to throw it out the window I started tracing that circuit section from the transformer output and found that I forgot to solder the final resistor in the power supply. It was extremely hidden under the capacitor, and it's a miracle I found it so soon. Once I soldered that and fired it back up everything went fine. It had been so long since I heard it, so it was impossible to make a comparison of what the Speedball did for the sound except that the background on silence is now completely black. It's definitely better than my STX's amp.

Even though I like this amp, I can't recommend that anyone give Bottlehead money for their products. The owner runs a forum which props up and feeds off of delusions such as >$1,000 cables, the burn-in of said cables, burn-in of headphones, burn-in of tubes, etc. You really can't get any sanity through to anyone over there, and they expect everyone to act like some west-coast-san-fran-love-everyone-liberal-sandal-wearing hippie. They are people who believe that a WAV sounds better than a FLAC, that don't understand what comes out of a DAC is not a staircase, who think that a file played from a HDD will sound different from one off an SSD, and are people who think because they paid for an "education" that what they said is authoritative fact on a subject. It's just a smaller head-fi but of its own corporate influence.

Yea I have to admit stuff like that is rather silly and def makes a company look like they are just out to get money.

That being said, I had a couple questions for you on your awesome rebuild/mod here. What power button did you use and where did you buy it? Also where did you have your PCBs made?

Also, how much did it cost you to get the plate and to get it cut?

I had the PCBs made at BatchPCB. Here is the link to the actual PCB I made. I have a whole bunch made, so if you PM me your address I can mail you one for free, otherwise you will have to pay more to order them and probably get 10 of them. I also have a PCB for the ALPS pot, if you want one of those, they sent me a whole slew of them.

I used a button made by Bulgin. Digikey should have some of them. It's where I got mine, and they just happened to have the model I wanted. It's the MPI002 model I used.

It cost me $25 to have the plate cut at a local place called Smucker Laser Cutting and Fabrication. I just e-mailed them my DXF, told them the material I wanted, and they e-mailed me back with the closest material they had and the quote. They do shipping.

I think at some point I am going to take it apart again and have it powder coated, do the milling I wanted, and use a different wire. The stranded wire was a pain to wrap around things, even tinned. It was especially painful to insert into the ALPS PCB. I would like to get some solid silver wire, but I can't seem to find any inside of the US that is insulated and come in red, white, and black.

Awesome! Very helpful! Thanks man!

Couple more quick questions: What voltage regulator did you use on your power switch relay board? 7805? And is that a 2N222A you used for switching the 5V relay?

See http://timramich.com/on_off_circuit/ for the schematic and parts list. You could probably use a 7805 if you wanted, but I chose to use something more efficient because it's always plugged in. It totally went over my head, but you would need a PIC chip. I bought a pack of 20, so you could order from me and I could send you the whole bundle of PCBs and the chip. The PIC chip isn't something I would send you for free, however.

No worries man, I actually have been developing with PICs for years now, so the coding is no issue. The rest of the circuit is pretty standard I was just curious what routes you went component wise. There is always more than one way to skin a cat as they say wink.gif I am actually working on something a bit different so I dont think your boards will help me, but thank you for the offer and all the info!
