I think that may be problematic. Not entirely sure, but Windows would be starting up all the wrong drivers.

Got a recovery partition on the current HDD?

That may at least get you a working OS.

Yeah, get rid of that thing. Even getting linux to run or boot was a pain. And the Lan port had physically died too.

You could donate it so someone could tinker with it.

If I have a machine that works at all, some school is usually willing to take it.

Well what is working on it? Your going to have to replace something to get it to work. I would suggest replacing the CD drive, probably can find one for $5 bucks or so on fleabay. If the rj-45 port is working you could theoretically connect directly to another PC. Or go dumpster diving you could probably find what you need in the trash somewhere. biggrin.gif

Chuck it, it's practically dead. You can pick up a cheap netbook for 200-250$ that would blow that thing away even when it was new. I had a Dell Inpsiron 5100, which came out a year before this, but they both pretty much look the same. I tried putting dozens of different linux distros on it, and the only one that worked was Xubuntu, and that crashed after 5 minutes of use too.
Those old Dell laptops are next to impossible to get any new OS on.

Yep, lucky for me it was still in "somewhat" operating condition, its somewhere around the house/closet/dungeon. cd drive was the end of its life and wouldn't read most cds. However. I came up with a plan to run linux off a usb even tho that thing was so old, usb boot hadn't been implemented yet. I got a boot cd that basically would bring an intereface up that would force usb boot, so I could run Linux mint 10 and install it. I was even lucky if the boot cd would work a 2nd time. Not too much an improvement over xp except in boot time but it worked. And i borrowed a LAN PCMCIA card and most of the usb 1.0 ports worked.

However in your case, you usb ports are out, you got network problems, and teh PCMCIA ain't working, you're looking for a heart attack trying to get this thing to "live" biggrin.gif
