Conclusion from review: assuming the price drops to parity with the U2711, this is probably a better monitor than that model. Better contrast ratio, better response time, lower energy use, less AG coating, portrait rotation capability, USB 3.0, and so on.
As the author of the review points out, unless you already had 10 Bit end to end workflow, the lack of a "10 bit" panel (which was really an 8 bit+ panel) won't be noticed.
I am kind of sad they ditched the card reader, but oh well.
This is my next monitor!

I think I'm going to get a U2711 anyways.
I like the stand design and bezel of the U2711 far more. The composite/component inputs will be used on my 2711. Energy consumption and heat production are no issue. And I would put the monitor into portrait. I'm almost positive I'll be alright with the AG coating also. USB 3.0 isn't needed if there is no card reader, in my opinion. So, as I said, I think for my needs and wants the U2711 is a better choice for me.

But I'll definitely recommend this to friends looking for a good, 2560 x 1440 monitor. If it is the same price as a U2711, I think that would be too much. But if it is $100-$200, that could make sense.

The only thing that would attract me to use this monitor is the better response time and lower AG coat, but as I said, I'd be fine with the AG. And the response time never seems to be an issue for anyone with a U2711.

I'll admit I didn't hit the article just yet but it'll be interesting to learn how this compares to the regular U2711. The regular one is already a dream to work on, let alone if it's improved on.

The tons of inputs are great for gaming and hooking up whatever to the monitor. Card reader is great for when you absolutely need to dump tons of memory cards at once or your bays are busy. Other than higher res, it'd be nice to see what they improve on it even if the price doesn't change (but hopefully that too).

GREAT NEWS BOYS

This will be *THE* 27 inch IPS panel to get. It is confirmed that the u2713HM is using a "light" anti reflective coating and not the super thick version that appeared on the 2711.

Thus all the complaints regarding the u2711 won't appear on the 2713!!! thumb.gif

The U2713HM trades off a lot of good features the U2711 had.
Like the card reader. As I said previously, I plan on just buying a U2711.

You'll be sorry because you'll notice the graininess from the super thick matte on the u2711. I'm telling you, the 2713 is better period.

https://www.google.com/#hl=en&sclient=psy-ab&q=u2711+anti+glare&oq=u2711+anti+glare&gs_l=hp.3..35i39j0l3.642.2847.0.2904.18.16.1.0.0.0.109.1185.13j3.16.0.les%3B..0.0...1.FwY0Stwgtwo&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&fp=1375b075ee4b71b2&biw=1996&bih=1084

The AG on the u2711 is so thick that it detracts from the image quality - the u2711 AG is about 4x thicker than what all other LED panels use. Its terrible. If you follow this google link you'll see people actually voiding their warranties to remove that crap from their u2711. Its especially apparent if you turn the contrast on the u3011/u2711 past 70 or so, you'll see sparkles on the screen from the AG being so thick, its quite ridiculous. I'd suggest not doing it unless you never look at white backgrounds. I have a u3011 and I cannot stand using it for anything besides games/movies, I use my samsung PLS for productivity stuff (2560x1440). The samsung unit has a "normal" anti glare, not a super thick one - hence the image quality doesn't suffer on white backgrounds.

In short, despite not having the card reader I see the 2713HM as being superior. I don't' care about the card reader as long as the image is better. Anyway, I know my advice isn't always wanted but I feel like you'd make a mistake by getting the u2711 over the 2713. Its agonizing looking at my u3011 which is flawless in every way except the freaking AG being so thick that it ruins a perfect display. I'm pretty ecstatic that the 2713 is using a "normal" AG coating.

My laptop has a very thick AG coating and it "sparkles" on white backgrounds. Never really bothered me. I have googled it before. And I've put a lot of consideration into it. Worst comes to worst? The AG is too thick? I just return and consider another monitor. But it would probably be the Samsung SB27970D or whatever that thing is called. The glass display.

I don't get why the didn't make the U2713HM the same thing as a 2711 with less anti glare, if so many people dislike it.

But yeah, in my research, it seems that it's all really subjective. I've been using screen with some thick AG for some time now and it doesn't bother me much. It seems to me that only about a 10th of people with a U2711 find the AG obnoxious or unbearable, while the rest are okay with it. I'm going to give it a shot. I've had my heart set on it for a while now.

Okay, well its your call. Just trying to help - so you don't look at a screen with agony like I do. I'm nearly 100% certain that the AG on your laptop is nowhere near what is present on the u2711 - trust me - the AG on the u2711 is thicker than a normal AG.

Just buy from a place with a good return policy though. I think amazon has had them on sale recently, actually.

I appreciate the concern and understand. My laptops AG is pretty thick. I'd say roughly 50% thicket than most screens I've used if I had to guess.
Even now with my current monitor, a Samsung P2770HD, I can easily see sparkles and the AG effect. But am not bothered, as I don't let myself focus on it.

I'm buying from Newegg. I MAY have to pay a restocking fee if I send it back, which could cost up to $125. But we'll see. I've heard great things, I've heard bad things.. But I think I'm going to really love that U2711.
