[Build Log] Red October

Current progress.

Hi there,

So since i upgraded my main sig rig in January i have had a motherboard, CPU and ram laying around that is still quite a capable system and i don't want to leave it to age into uselessness so i have decided to throw together a rig from things that i have had laying around. The theme for this build will be Black and red as i have never built a black and red themed build before.

The build will be based off a Lian LI PC7 Plus. Sadly it does have some problems in that it has been modded before by myself years ago and putting it short it was a half arsed job. Didn't prime the case before i painted it and some of the cable management holes are a little rough around the edges.

Side note if anyone can come up with a better name. Do tell.
The Case (Click to show)
This is a makeshift before picture as i dived in head first with this project ( fans of naked aluminium will want to shoot me when they see what i have planned xD)
The only difference is my case had a very crappy black paint job on it which was chipped and scratched to hell.

This is the beauty in its naked form. Sorry i don't have any before photos as i kinda dived in head first with this one sanding away but before it was not pretty. Very chipped as i did not prime and only used one coat of paint so it practically flaked off with a rub with something hard. (do cut me some slack on that one though folks i was 13 when i first got that case and did the mod)

The side panel mod looks fine from here but you will see what its like on the other side...
Also side note this used to be my main rig "The defender MK 1" years ago hence the sticker.

Yep, like a moron in my early days a few years ago i decided that it would be a good idea to use white duct tape to hold the window on kookoo.gif So the result is a messy horrorshow.
Not sure what to do here. I could either just mount a window in again or ditch the side-panel and go for a fully windowed side-panel. What do you guys think ?

Next the components that inspired the build in the first place complete with one of corsairs lovely new fans.

The actual specifications are:

Core 2 Quad Q8400 @ 3.2 GHz
MSI P35 Platinum motherboard
Corsair A50 Bought on friday that along with the New corsair fan as i was using an arctic freezer 7 before.
4GB of Corsair XMS2 DDR 2 800 ram
XFX HD 5770 1gb graphics card
the components (Click to show)

My Trusty XFX HD 5770 that only served as a stop gap when my GTX 260 called it quits.

I will be using a 60Gb SSD for the boot drive and an 80GB hard drive for the storage (not finalized may change)

Next the power supply, I am using a cheap-ish power supply that was sat in my case. It claims to be a 650 W power supply but when you actually look at the amperage's and do the math it only puts out 348 W on the 12V rail but hey-ho i have tested it with the system under full load and it handles it Ok.
The power supply (Click to show)
Does not look bad i like the finish but it does not match the theme i'm going for so it will be stripped and repainted

This has already been sort of modded with a fan grill as the stock one looked crap and rattled (see the stock pic for reference)
Actually after googling the Atrix 500T came in a variety of forms a blue plastic then the titanium look with fan grille and the punched out grille like below. That's what my one had before the mods.

Internals look promising.

There we go. Sanded down ready for painting. I will do that when my etching primer arrives on Tuesday.

Ok Quick update: I'm still waiting on some parts to arrive but my fans arrived today and i got started on that. I ordered 3 RED LED fans as they were quite cheap and saved me the hassle of running wires for the LED's. However they are clear fans and i have never been a fan (biggrin.gif) of Clear LED fans they remind me too much of the bodged up cases of 2005 era. So i'm painting the fans black. and i'm also going to be sleeving the cables in black sleeving.

For those who are Lazy here is the finished modded fan.
finished fan (Click to show)

Below is a more in depth walkthrough of what i did.
Fan Modifications (Click to show)
These are the new fans ! They are really good to say they only cost 4 pounds each. Very quiet and come with nice long cables with both a molex connection and the usual 3 pin connection. First off lets chop those molex connectors off.

Close up...

Not bad. Wires are a bit of a mess though.

Thats one cable sleeved

Fan disassembled

You don't want to get Paint inside the motor so mask that off

Now you want to prep the fan by giving it a light sanding so the paint sticks then you want to rub it down with a tack cloth to get and dust off.

Here is my make shift painting area. Just some welding wire hanging off a forklift xD

I would recommend to warm up the paint in some hot water it really helps the paint flow so you get a nice even spray from the nozzle

Gogo out of focus photo's !

All done... Now just two more.

That's it for now.

Time for an update...

Here is the current state of play with a test fit of the motherboard. Notice the Cable sleeving on the front panel wires.

Case Painting (Click to show)
Ok so Here is the before (i don't have any of it after it was fully sanded down but don't worry it was before i painted it)

First the rather ugly looking beige Etch primer on the bare metal.

Nice closeup...

Back on the desk to cure for 8 hours...

Now the Grey Primer...

Now to sit for 24 hours...

Shabby cutting job i did years go frown.gif

And she's Done ! Looking very nice too.
Power supply progress (Click to show)

The etch primer again..

Now the Primer...

And the finished result of the case painting with a fan though the pictures are kind of crappy. Still not done with the internals as i'm waiting for more cable sleeving to arrive.

Ok Update time. I have ordered some smoked Plexiglass that will serve as the side panel as i really cannot use that Side panel it looks annoys me knowing what a mess the other side is and i quite like the idea of a full clear side. I still need to paint and put the PCI plates back on, Get some SMD RED strip LED's to light the case up slightly more ect, ect the list goes on. Anyway this is how it sits now...

Here is what the power supply looks like now that i have painted it sleeved it and stuffed a red fan into it...
Oh and the blue glow is just a CCFL that i hooked up to it to give it load so it would start up.

And here is a collection of photo's to peek at that i didn't actually use.
Random collection of photo's (Click to show)
Front panel Sleeved

Front plate on and the NZXT Fan controller in (had it laying around for years bought cheap as the time does not stay correct and when switched to manual fan controll they ramp up to 100% no matter what you do, so i just plonk it on auto)

Another shot at a different angle

front with the front plate off, the switch will to turn on and off the LED lighting when i install it so that you can leave the pc on and sleep without a beem of red light in your face.

an angle from the top showing the hole for the cables and the back of the fan controller (it only has two fan cables plugged in there but there are much more for the power and temp sensing ect when you its fuly installed.)

24 pin Plug Sleeving, i would have done individually sleeved but it would have cost too much in sleeving. So i just did two cables per run.

Power supply with its mods completed

close up of the fan that i decided not to paint so that it would light up more shining throughout the frame.

I dug out some older photo's

Oh and here you can see what i was talking about with the shining more though the frame...

That is it for now. Next update will be in a few days and i may highjack one of my Friends DSLR Camera's for the final photo's later on.

Update: life and college got interested so i never got time to finish this project off. I will be returning to it in January for now sadly it will sit under a dustcloth.
