Prodigy build - Need advice!

Hey there this is my first post here but have been silently stalking for a while now wink.gif

Right now down to business! I am in the middle of building a new rig that will be used primarily for gaming and as a HTPC for the missus and my son. Most parts have been ordered although I'm still awaiting a few parts to be delivered.

This is the build currently:

CASE
Bitfenix Prodigy White

CPU
Intel Core i5 3570K

MB
ASUS P8Z77-I Deluxe (Awaiting delivery).

RAM
Corsair Vengeance 2x4GB

PSU
Power Cool 650AUBA Modular ( was going for something along the lines of a Corsair HX650 but as this was £30 I thought why not!). This will need case modification to make it fit though.

HDD
Western Digital Caviar Green 3TB (Awaiting delivery)

SSD
OCZ 128GB Vertex 4 SSD

ODD
Samsung SH-B123L Blu Ray ( I would prefer to do without this but the missus won't budge lol).

GRAPHICS
I'm undecided between a GTX 680/90 but that can wait for now.

Now basically I am pretty much there on the hardware side of things but I am looking to try and make this thing as silent as possible as it will be being used as a HTPC as well as a gaming rig, I am planning on overclocking it but nothing too major as I still want it as stable as possible, I am wondering what are my options for making this build as silent as possible? I have looked at other Prodigy builds and everyone that has been water cooing has had the ODD bay removed which I cannot do and has majorly limited my options on making this thing silent, I was wondering if you guys could think of anything?

Welcome to OCN! thumb.gif

Unfortunately, the H100 doesn't work with the ODD bay filled up. If you really want to do watercooling, you can fit a 200mm radiator at the front and 120/140mm rad at the back while still being able to retain the Blu-ray drive. An easier alternative would be to have an external Blu-ray drive. thumb.gif

Making the CPU silent would be easy with the bigger/higher-end CPU air coolers, but GPUs always run hot and loud unless they are under water.

Get a tower-cooler with PWM fans smile.gif

The Alpenföhn K2 comes to mind - But I am sure there are other coolers where you can put some PWM fans on yourself (The K2 comes with a pair of PWM fans, so no need to go out and spent more money) - The Highend towers, like K2, D14 and Phanteks cools more than enough for a fair overclock.

But all in all - Just get an aircooler (Performance may wary) and slap on some PWM fans - Noise sorted smile.gif

Thank you biggrin.gif

Yep the H100 was my first option but with the ODD bay filled, no chance. Thanks for the suggestion with the front and back rads, sounds like a good plan! I was considering air cooling the CPU but that wouldn't eliminate the noise from the GPU, which to be honest is my main concern considering it's the loudest component.

So my best bet would be a custom single loop with two rads then? If so would I need a reservoir or would the heat be fine from both the CPU and GPU (Silence is my priority before overclocking)? Because I'm sure that I wont have room for a reservoir.

Also I could go down the root of a H70 for the CPU and a single loop with one 200mm rad for the GPU but I am unsure at the moment.

I am new to water cooling, as you can probably tell redface.gif so thanks for the help guys!

I would probably, in your situation (Room to play with - and so forth) aim for a 200mm in front - 120 at the top (Could do a 140 as already mentioned).

As for the resevoir, go for a T-line - Harder to bleed (Mine took a few hours) but works perfectly fine, and it requires little to none room.

If you want to save even more room, get the Apogee Drive II (I am currently using it in my setup) - Run it at 30-40 % speed and you cant hear it (And it still maintains my temps below 80C on a 3570K @ 4.8).

I personally wouldn't bother doing watercooling in the Prodigy. Instead go with a decent mid size air cooler like the XIGMATEK AEGIR and get a GTX 680 with a aftermarket cooler like the Twin Frozr III or ARCTIC COOLING Accelero Xtreme III. You can also get noise dampening foam to further reduce the noise.

I could be wrong, but i'm under the impression that the prodigy CAN take a 200mm rad in the front w/o blocking the use of the 5.25 bay? even if i'm wrong, you can always go with a slim optical instead of the standard optical drive.

might want to ask that question in this thread http://www.overclock.net/t/1279693/bitfenix-prodigy-owners-club

and no. air cooling is not really an option because prodigy is way too big if you were going with air cooling to begin with biggrin.gif there are much smaller and better air cooling case for ITX then prodigy biggrin.gif

^I already recommended that. wink.gif

This can be another alternative since the Accelero Xtreme III is relatively silent. The only drawback is that the cost is almost similar to a full cover waterblock.

Watercooling is expensive to start off, but once you have parts, you almost never have to upgrade them except for the GPU waterblock.

well if you wanna keep it simple

for the GPU, attach to the front of the case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186067

and for the CPU throw an antec 920 or corsair h80 on the rear exhuast
