Phenom II X4 B93 vs. Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition for file server

Got a question for the AMD folks here please.

I'm building a new small power-saving non-CPU demanding fileserver to run a non-Windows OS. Going to use this motherboard: M5A78L-M LX PLUS

Either way I go at microcenter it will be $150 for MOBO+CPU+RAM. Question I have is which CPU would you choose ?

The 965 is a 125W model while the B93 is a 95W CPU. I realize the 965 is 3.2, while the B93 is 2.8, but both are quad core and the B93 appears to use less power ?

Given that the price is the same for both, which would you choose and why ?

1500 words or less please. biggrin.gif

And thanks.

You pretty much just made up your own mind without knowing it. You want power saving as well as a file server. the Phenom II B93 would be your best bet because:
1. It's a file server. HDD speed and bandwidth speed are more important the cpu power
2. Phenom II B93 is dirt cheap. More money for HDD's so you can store more files.
3.You can pretty much come up with your own third reason lol

The former is not supported by this motherboard due to VRM restrictions.
