Why do you overclock your GPU?

Thread Starter
Why do people overclock a GPU? Do you get the same benefits as overclocking a CPU?

Say, a GTX 680 for example. It's already a fantastic card that plays nearly everything with decent/good FPS.

What are the advantages of overclocking it? Do you get better FPS, less heat? Fill me in. I'm interested.

More framerate maybe? if you can max out let say 3 monitors of 2560 x 1600 with one gtx 680, be my guest. Games like crysis, metro 2033 the witcher etc cant get max out. Some people only overclock for fun.

If you dont see the advantage of oc a gtx 680, others will! Don't forget, you're on OVERCLOCK.NET after all!

Better FPS in games, and better hash rates. 17% OC + the unlock on my 6950s nets me a 20% better frame rate in some games vs. stock.

Even with faster cards, there is always more eye candy that can be added, and I can't imagine any setup that I wouldn't OC to some degree.

My overclock is the difference between a choppy 35-45fps, and a nice smooth 55+

If any more reason needed?

I have two profiles that I use on my GTX 480:
845 MHz and +12 mV, which I use for intensive games; it gives me about a 16% performance boost
770MHz and -88mV, which I use for lighter games that I can get 60FPS in anyway; it gives my about an 8% boost, and is much cooler than stock
If I max out the voltage (+50mV) I can get to 860MHz, which is an 18% boost, but it's not worth the extra heat and voltage.

The first profile is very helpful for games where I am getting less than 40 FPS normally; it makes the game a lot more playable. There's no reason not to get the boost in performance, in my opinion.

This. At the end of the day what your after is more performance, whether it be gaming, folding, or whatever you use it for. But for the most part, its free. You have to have a little know-how (OCN helps with that wink.gif ) and a lot of patience, but it allows you to do more with what you already have.

It's also fun, at least for me.

This is why most people oveclock:

1. bragging rights

2. Limit testing

3. OC so you can get more out of your stuff

4. Benchmarking

5. More power and more room/higher max capacity
