Why do you overclock your GPU? - Page 3

The only GPU's I have ever overclocked are my Sapphire HD 6950's unlocking them to Crossfire 6970's. I have tried overclocking my previous AMD and Nvidia cards before but never found any advantage what so ever in doing so.

I don't overclock GPU's for permanent use, GPU's are very sensitive especially GPU VRAM. And they can die simply by pushing them outside of spec (CPUs it's a different matter), the majority of GPU RMA's are a result of people pushing GPU's to far for meaningless benchmark scores.

Personally i've found the gains in overclocking GPU's for gaming.....pointless to say the least. But that's just me....

I do it just for fun and out of boredom and to see just how much better my GPU can perform. Hey if you can pay spend less but get better performance then why not? WHy spend that extra 20 or even 50 or 100 dollars to let EVGA or whoever OC your card for you?

Agreed, I have learned the hard way that GPU's are sensitive to overclocking so I just leave them stock and enjoy not having to RMA card's and being able to game without worry. Saw very little improvement anyway so I don't bother with it anymore.

It's not that gpus are sensitive to overclocking, its that they have terrible stock cooling and low quality components (at least as far as reference designs go). Slap a full coverage block on a high end reference card or pick up a nice OC-oriented non-reference and you can OC to your heart's content.

It's funny, because you wouldn't push a 35% OC on a CPU with stock cooler, but people try the same thing on stock cooled GPUs and then wonder why they die, even though stock cooling for gpus is even worse!

I do it for the same reason I do it to my CPU; because I can. I'm interested in taking things and maximizing their capabilities. I'm not satisfied running my CPU at 3.4ghz if it can do 4.6ghz. I'm not satisfied running my GPU at 1ghz when it can do 1.26ghz.

It's all about taking things to their limits/extremes. This is how we learn things too! Exploration biggrin.gif

The only thing that I could imagine doing damage to a GPU in the stock BIOS is overheating; if you have a good cooler, it should be fine. With most cards, they won't let you put enough voltage through the card in the stock BIOS to damage it.

With DDR5, didn't they put in a feature that stops it from overheating? I've never bothered to overclock my memory, so I wouldn't know.
