What are you doing other than gaming that puts the card at full load? It is designed to downclock itself if there is little to no load.

I'm overclocking my GPUs because I'm gaming with 3X 30'' Eyefinity at 7680X1600, so I'm desperately craving for every fps I can get!

I run my gpu overclocked because it is no longer stable at stock volts and stock clocks. thumb.gif

And if I'm going to have my voltage raised above stock I might as well just run the clocks higher than stock as well.

I OC for that extra bump in FPS. 55 to 60 totally wort it biggrin.gif Even so I don't overclock every GPU. If I had an card that ran everything maxed I would not bother. In fact might even down clock to reduce the heat and noise.

At stock my Radeon 7850 pulls 5200 PPD. OCd to 1180 MHz it pulls 7300.

To me that is a HUGE boost.

Because I can. And while older cards may not have seen a significant boost and had a much shorter life from overclocking, I promise you the 28% increase on my 7970 is very, very noticeable when I'm playing games that have ridiculously demanding graphics options, since I'm by no means bottlenecked anywhere else.

But it's by no means free. I almost doubled the power usage on my card OCing it. Don't care though, my video card still uses less electricity than the bug zapper outside, and that stays plugged in 24/7 down here I promise you.

running two monitors will keep it from down clocking, at least it does with my GTX260
but I recently stumbled across a thread about using a 3rd party app that will force it into the down clocked power state and ramp it back up when certain conditions are met like running specific exes or based on gpu usage. I set it based on gpu usage so I don't have to remember to add the exe to the list when ever I install a game

So does mine actually :/ but it used to hit 95c on stock clocks before the repaste so I thought, what the hell, and overclocked it to within an inch of what the power supply can handle.

Actually, it doesn't use the GPU at all :/ it just runs on 3D clocks I suspect because of nVidia drivers being odd.
