got a crosshair iv and 975BE in a trade.. never benched AMD

Thread Starter
The last AMD rig I owned and overclocked was socket-A athlon and so much has changed since then. I picked up an ASUS Crosshair IV Formula and Phenom II x4 975BE in a trade and now im debating on whether or not it's even worth spending the money to bench it.

Gappo, I know you bench AMD so maybe you can give me some feedback. Are there many points to be had on hwbot with a setup like this? I did some looking around and for many of the CPU benches, even a gold hw cup will only give you like 7 points or something ridiculously low like that. Then again it may just be fun to learn how to tweak on an AMD setup again.. I always loved tweaking when FSB was a big player in the game. Maybe if I learn to bench/tweak this setup I can pick up a cheap crosshair v and fx series chip and go for a raw frequency record.

So what do you all think? Is it worth the time and money spent on LN2 or do you think it would be better to throw it up for sale and pick up an FX-series setup?

What advice or pointers would you give for someone who has been overclocking nothing but intel since the Socket-A AMD days? What benches are most "boint friendly" for PhenomII chips?

As always, thanks for the help and team support thumb.gif

On that chip, not so much. HW points go by popularity of the chip, and that one only has 254 total.

CHIV is a pretty good AMD high HTT ddr3 board once you learn how to tweak it.

Gotta make sure you get the early manufactured BD chips for that wink.gif, newer ones won't get very far.

There are a lot of hardware boints in amd chips, just need to get the right ones. Read the stickies in the amd section for amd overclocking. Make sure you get k10stat to change multi in windows, get a good set of clocking elpida hypers that can do 6-6-6 @1800+, use the rog connect cable to change voltages and HTT without software on the fly.

For all newer amd chips, 2d benches are the only things that get hardware points (superpi, pifast, cpu-z, wprime, ect). Some of the high popularity chips (and therefore worth more points) are the 555BE, 965BE, 955BE, 1090T, 960T(only chip that unlocks to x5 core), 720BE.

Apart from BD high freq chips, there are two categories that AMD will get you globals in, x1, x3, x5 core wprime, pcmark runs. This is because of few of the chips unlock, and intel does not have any chips that fit that category, or the ones they do are very old.

AMD is mainly for HW boints, not gonna get much global with them. There aren't a lot of subs with that particular chip so it won't really get very much, but AMD are fun to get under ln2. If you have it anyway I'd bench it, a few boints are still boints.
Only pointer I can give is k10stat, great little prog for OCing in windows, & the newest cpu-z (think it's 1.61.3)

very thorough and much appreciated! i think ill just spend some time re-familiarizing myself with the AMD platform in general and see if i can squeeze a few boints out of this chip. i can probably pick up one of the more popular chips for pretty cheap so that may be what i do to get a greater amount of hw points.
I would need to pick up a newer board though if i wanted to run a BD chip right? or is AM3 compatible with AM3+ chips with bios update?

It looks like it is possible (only on crosshair IV variation boards afaik), but I can't say if there is much difference between the boards.

hmm thats pretty interesting. def good to know!

so after booting up and taking a quick peak at the BIOS... it's hideous lol. i havent used a non-UEFI bios in a while and its just ugly looking biggrin.gif

Also the only mode of vcore control is voltage offset .. not thrilled about that, but whatever.
im also reading that max temps on air/water testing need to stay below 60c .. huge difference from current intel specs lol

i need to figure out how strong the IMC is on these bad boys.. im running a gskill kit of samsung chips rated at 8-9-9-24 1866 that easily clock to 2600 10-12-12-28 on ivy bridge. would be nice to get at least ~2200. i need to see how high i can get FSB...
still trying to figure out the significance of, and difference between, HTT freq and CPU-NB freq... both can contribute to IMC/dram stability and OC?

There is an option to change offset to manual. If that option does not appear, get a different BIOS. I think I'm running 1304 in mine.

K10 amd stuff (athlon II/phenom II) are limited to 1866mhz, give or take 100mhz depending on how good your chip is. You will not see 2000mhz+ though (at least I've never heard of it being done or seen it).

Only thing I've ever seen HTT Link affect, is northbridges with the integrated Radeons, and then it only benefits 3d benches. Most everyone just keeps it around 2000. Possibly some stability less than 2000, but that is subjective and your's to experiment with.

CPU-NB is a major factor in performance. The higher the better. Cool it down and pump 1.7-1.8v in the the cpu-nb and let it fly.
