Budget PSU suggestions

Thread Starter
Hello OCN, it's been a long time since I've visited this forum.

Anyways I'm here ensuring that I get the best PSU I can squeeze in for my friend's new budget computer. The system will have a 965 BE and a GTX 560 in it, no OC or anything fancy, just a budget gaming build. Right now I'm considering the Rosewill RG430-S12 430W as it is $40 with promo code on Newegg. Just looking for suggestions and thoughts on this subject before I tell him what to buy in a couple of days from now.

I would be leary to run a 560 with that PSU, as it is right around the bare minimum recommended 12v rail. Keep in mind that for a gaming system, 12v amps and rail layout will be just as important as the watt rating(which varies drastically based on each manufacturers testing methodology). With a 33a 12v rail, that will be cutting it close for a 560 with it's minimum 30a requirement. As you get closer to the maximum load on a PSU, your rail fluctiuation and ripple will increase, which can cause everything from random instability to actual damage to parts.

The Rosewell Green TwoCables linked here for 50 bucks is a much safer bet for not much more cash smile.gif. Looks like the CX line "Builder Series" PSU's have gone through some aggressive remodeling for the worse, and I would not recommend them over other similarly priced offerings anymore.

Wow, yeah it looks like this is the best choice due to that price.  The only other one I could recommend is the Corsair CX430 V2 for $44.99 shipped.  It comes with a $15 Mail-In Rebate too (which I believe is just a pre-paid rebate card).

There's also the 530W Rosewill Green Series for $49.99 shipped.

It is a "GlobeFan" OEM'd PSU, and not exactly built with a focus on quality and longevity.
The CX500 Corsair is currently $40 after MIR, and while on the surface seems similar with its only 1amp higher 12v rail, it is a much more robust and higher quality unit then the Rosewell. That is about the minimum I would go for with the info you gave.

The last I heard, the Rosewill Green Series is line of PSUs that are safe to recommend.

Yep, and after doing a quick google just now apparently Corsair changed the vendor for the CX line and I would not be so quick to recommend them anymore. My how fast times change laughingsmiley.gif .

They are now much cheaper, and rated at a silly low 30c instead of the standard 40c most quality units use. The Rosewill 530 you linked is a much better PSU, and I am editing my post to reflect that thumb.gif.

That was a while ago, and the v2s made some improvements to the CWT design. They're good enough for low-end systems.

Surprised they dropped it below $50, but it's a win-win for us.

This is only true for cheap, mediocre PSU's. Any PSU of decent quality should be able to keep ripple and voltage fluctuation within spec for the entire rated output range of the unit and beyond to some extent. Quality PSU's are built to run continuously at their maximum rated output, not to be babied for their lifetime.
Almost any PSU will be "within spec", but that's not saying much. The ATX spec allows a full 5% voltage fluctuation, which equates to 120mV on the 12v rail(!). While that may not damage anything and will still be considered within spec, it is way more then you want - especially on an overclocked system.

Again, this is only true for some PSU's; most quality PSU's keep well within that 5% threshold (less than 1%) at or above their maximum rated output and do not make any noticeable impact on overclocking. This is not something to worry about with any PSU we recommend.
