Business Ceiling Speakers - recommendations?

Thread Starter
Looking to purchase ceiling speakers for a new business but I have no idea what is good quality. I really don't want to spend more than $50 a speaker as quality isn't a main priority but clarity would be good.

Looking to purchase a 4+ speaker system with an audio receiver. It will be for a grocery store.

p.s. any idea of where to buy intercom systems from?

Thanks in advanced guys!

I'm by no means an expert, but I do believe you'll want a 70-volt system for in-ceiling use. I've always had good luck buying audio gear from Parts Express, so here are my recommendations:

Amp, which allows paging (intercom that works only one way): http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=300-202

Basic speaker: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=242-838

Same as above but with built in volume control for $6 more: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=242-9406

Total cost for amp + 4 cheapest speakers is a little over $200. This does not include wiring or installation costs.

The nice thing about 70V is that you can add almost as many speakers as you want without worrying about impedance matching. The speakers I linked to all have built in transformers.

Disclaimer, I have not personally heard the quality of these and can't vouch for it, but go by the reviews on PE. Being in-ceiling speakers, they won't give you the highest sound quality possible but will work perfectly for background music or PA.

Thanks for the quick response, looking into it now.

Also came across this:

Edit: I think i'm just going to grab these speakers for the time being and shop around for the receiver and/or intercom device. thumb.gif

Thanks to everyone that helped!

The Amazon and Monoprice ones you linked to are not 70V speakers -- they'll work with a regular receiver but you will need to match impedance. If you only need 4 of them, it'll work fine on a 4-channel 8 ohm receiver (or 2-channel 4-ohm, or any other supported configuration). But if you plan on adding a lot of speakers, 70V is the way to go.

Yeah, I'll only be doing 4-8, nothing more. I just need to figure out what receiver to pick up. I decided on the monoprice ones. what do I need to look at to match impedance? I'm looking for a sony receiver <$200

Those are 8 ohm speakers so nearly any "home" receiver will work. I'd suggest a used Sony on eBay, you can get 'em for under $100.

The important thing to remember is wiring them correctly. Since you need to match impedance, you're limited in the wiring configurations you can use.

1 speaker per channel: wire directly to the receiver. This gives you 2 speakers on a stereo receiver.

4 speakers per channel: wire 2 pairs of speakers in series (which will give a 16 ohm load) and wire the 2 pairs in parallel to bring the load down to 8 ohms. This gives you 8 speakers on a stereo receiver.

If you want 4 speakers in stereo, you'll need to buy a 4 or 5 channel receiver, and in some cases you might need to buy an RCA splitter on the input to run the same signal to the "front" and "rear" speakers. Then you can use one speaker per channel.

Mismatching impedance won't blow anything up right awau, but it'll either cause the receiver to overheat under load (if impedance is too low) or won't give you the power output advertised (if impedance is too high).

I used Atlas speakers from Sweetwater when I installed 80 of them at a venue I work in. I powered them all via QSC ISA Ti amplifiers. The speakers are about $30 each bare, and then mounting hardware is usually a few bucks more. Yes, these models come with the 70v transformers on them. But they are actually just 8ohm speakers at the heart.

for a 300watt ISA Ti, it's about $600. But I'm sure cheaper 70v amps that are more basic are available.

EDIT: these are pretty close to what I got 3-4 years ago.

http://www.atlassound.com/Product.aspx?id=1263&pI=1261

EDIT: Nookin is right, ESPECIALLY when it comes to home theater A/V gear. Don't put a load on an amp that it's not rated for. We push professional amps in my industry down to 2Ohms on a regular basis, and if they are not designed to go that low they will die.
