My postbit information won't update. Avatar missing, user title won't change

  • What happened?
I was bored, and I discovered that I have photos in My Profile that I don't want, so I deleted them. I also deleted the avatar photo just as a test to see what would happen (again, I'm bored). As I half-expected, my avatar went away but it was replaced by the image that says "Image not available" in it.

I uploaded my avatar (same avatar that I've always had) and made sure it was actually set as my avatar. My profile didn't reflect the change, and neither did any of my posts

I then went to update my user title to "I don't know where my avatar went", and that immediately made my avatar show up on "My Profile", but not in my posts.

I updated a few minutes later to "I don't know what happened to my avatar", and over 20 minutes have passed and it's still showing the old title of "I don't know where my avatar went". However, I can see the new title while I'm viewing "My Profile"

Just to make sure this wasn't affecting my entire account, I tested to see if signature changes showed up immediately, and they do. I changed my signature, refreshed a post of mine, and I saw the new version of my signature but yet my postbit is unchanged.

This has affected all of my posts on this entire message board, including my oldest post.

  • Are you able to reproduce this problem consistently?

    It seems so, yes.

  • What steps did you take to reproduce this problem?

I literally repeated what I did that seems to have started this: I deleted the new avatar and uploaded another. I then changed my user title again.

  • What action did you expect to occur when this bug appeared?

I expected to be able to simply re-upload my avatar and be done with it.

  • Any additional information that will help us diagnose the issue:

    None at this time.

  • Browser, active browser addons, and operating system:

Firefox 12, tested in Firefox's Safe Mode.

    Windows 7

  • URL where the issue occurs:

I'm not sure if there really is a specific URL where this is occurring.

However, I suppose the most relevant might be the one for the My Profile system for any member.

Edit: Oh now I have my avatar again, but it doesn't look quite right. What is going on here? It looks smaller or something.

Edit 2: Now it seems that making major changes to my signature helps get my postbit information updated.

Postbits can and do cache for performance reasons. Generally postbits aren't something that are critical to keep up to date in absolute real time, so they cache for preserve resources. It's not terribly uncommon for them to take 15-20 minutes to update depending on what processes are running on the server (if we have backups going and other stuff like that, things will lag more).

I just swapped my avatar out and it shows immediately, though.

Oh.  It's just that I could have sworn it used to update immediately every single time.

Maybe I'm thinking of the version of vBulletin that OCN had.  So, this is good to know.  Thank you!

It shouldn't lag TOO badly, at least, anytime other than in the middle of the night (relative to Pacific time) which is when we run all the nightly processes.  If you find that there's way too much lag and it happens during normal hours, let me know what you did and when and how long it took to show up.  After verifying that it's not cached locally, of course.  I can always look into it if it seems to be not working as expected.  :)

So that's why it's slow at those times.  Do these "nightly processes" have to be run every single night?  Will there ever be a time when you won't have to do that anymore?  I have to admit that using OCN during those hours is a big test of patience (among other things for me with this platform).

Yes they do, it's when we make separate backups and so on.  We definitely need those, and we do them at a time when there is the least traffic on OCN.  Unfortunately, some users notice a slowdown at that point due to that, but it's absolutely necessary.
