New builder chick, No display, no boot, nada on my screen, guys.

Hey Everyone.
First post -- go easy on me.
First build. Lawdy this stuff is complicated.

Pieces recently replaced out of my Dell XPS:
Asrock Z68 Pro3 Gen3 Mobo
Intelcore i5 processor
Agiliy 3 SSD 120GB SATA III (2.5")

Pieces kept in the machine
Dell modular power supply, 750W max output
NVIDIA GTX 260
Optical drive (I honestly don't know any specs on it...it's an optical drive..)
DELL XPS case

Pieces lost or removed:
My sanity
My "can-do" attitude

Here's what's going on:
PLEDs all working fine. System turns on, CPU fan runs, vid card fan runs, LEDs working all over the place. Monitor is connected (same as optical mouse and my keyboard) but they all show nothing (Mouse is dark, keyboard -no lights, monitor no signal).
Tried putting in the win install CD, nothing; tried the "support/driver" cd for the Mobo, nothing.
Also checked USB ports in the back using a small thumbdrive (lights up when connected).
The thing turns on, but I have nothing but a blank screen.

I'm a first time builder. I live on the west coast and all of my east coast brilliant minds who have guided me through the process are currently sleeping. Boo. Any help or advice you can give would be much appreciated.

Sorry that should read "Pieces I Have recently put into my XPS" --- not stuff I took out. Derp.
Well start with the basics. Are all the power supply cables plugged in correctly? Is the front panel plugged in correctly also? You're using a GTX 260, should be plugging the monitor into that yeah?

Also you can edit your post with the little pencil in the bottom left of the post. thumb.gif

Thanks. Didn't see the "edit" button. I"m a bit frazzled at the moment. -- And thanks for replying.

I tried plugging my monitor into the videocard input, and also into the input that is directly on the mobo.
Also, I'm going to assume that the power is all correctly plugged in based on the fact that the CD drive opens, the SSD is lighting up, the fan on the mobo is running, and the fan on the vid card is running. Everything has power, definitely.
The only thing that I know is not functioning specifically is the pair of USB ports I have on the front of the computer. Only one is connected to the mobo because the other one is too short (new atx motherboard is about 2.5 inches shorter than the old one -- need an extension). So I can understand if those aren't working -- then again, one of them should be because it's connected.
Nevertheless - The computer has no OS (forgot to write that, too).
I remember lining up the notches on the CPU. Is it possible, for some odd reason, that I got the thing in backwards? Would it still even turn on if it were in there backwards?

I am assuming that you do not have a windows install and plan to put it on that ssd. I would try plugging your monitor into the onboard graphics and then switch it after you can boot up and update the 260.

Edit:I see you posted while i was typing : P

yes the basics of t/s:
upglug everything except the video card, memory, cpu. press power. do you get anything on screen? does your monitor have more than one input? If it does try changing the inputs (for example you have a vga and dvi jack on the back of your monitor). Make sure you have a speaker or the built in speaker on the motherboard so you hear the beeps to clue you in. Last if you still get no video. Does your motherboard have vga or dvi built in? if it does, try removing the video card and then plugging your monitor into the on board video jack (dvi, hdmi, vga).
Good Luck and welcome to OCN.

Well then the next step that I would take would be to start taking parts out of the computer. Take the GPU out and try booting up, does it work now? You can try reseating the RAM, take it all the way out and put it back in one stick at a time (so only one in the board) to make sure the RAM is OK. If it still wont work you could take the mobo out of the case and test it to see if the case is causing a problem. You could also take the CPU out and try reseating it also, although they are hard to mess up IMHO.

No beeps. When you say speaker -- are you referring to one of those little tiny speakers that attached directly to the mobo? Or a regular speaker with an audio jack that I connect to the back of the pc?
Have the latter, not the former.
Unplugged everything except vid card, cpu/mobo, and memory.

Forgot to write that my 2 memory sticks are RipjawsX. Tried removing and replacing.
Something new has happened since I moved the memory around -- when it turns on, the fan starts high speed, and then goes to a lower speed. Before, it was just running highspeed for however long i had the computer on. Don't know if that makes a difference, or if that means anything.
Also, before, to turn it off, I had to hold the front power button in for a few seconds. Now when I press it (just simply press), it turns off. That mean anything?

Thank you, btw, everyone, for replying to quickly. Nice to know people are out there to help! smile.gif

Ok things to check.

1) Make sure the 24 pin connector and 8 pin (at the top of the motherboard) are both plugged in.
2) Random i know but make sure that CPU fan is plugged into the CPU_FAN header on the Motherboard. Which appears to be to the LEFT of the 8 Pin
3) Double check all connections, and make sure the GTX260 is seated properly along with your ram. You might as well reseat everything.

Perhaps post a picture of the system maybe we will be able to spot something.

Welcome to OCN. We will get this figured out

Also use the DVI connection on the 260. the left most one while looking at the rear of the case.

Ninja edit..

Another thing. How is the GPU powered right now? Those OEM PSU's tend to only have one 6 pin
