SDXC as extended ultrabook storage

I'm about to buy an ASUS Zenbook Prime, but I'm concerned that the 128GB SSD is going to fill up too quickly (256GB model is $400 more so not worth it). I had the idea to use an SDXC card (probably 64GB) to give it that little bit of extra space to store music, videos, etc... but I can't find any information on whether anybody had done this before. The card i'm looking at is a class: UHS-I read: 50MB/s write: 20MB/s and access: ~1.5ms.

Given this information the access times look like that of a low end HDD so it should work, it should even be capable of installing applications on.
So is there something I'm missing here? or is it a good idea?

I don't see why it wouldn't work. I mean its going to be slower than a standard HDD, I don't know if I would trust it to install applications on, but... could be used as a storage drive. Do you have another system to test and see if windows will allow you to install to a memory card?

I have a 120gb and 128gb drive in my laptops, and with win7 installed, office, all my other crap, plus games like bf3 and D3, i usually have a good amount of space left.

I assume the zenbook has an msata SSD in it, so upgrading to something larger will be limited and very expensive, so it may be your only option if you don't want to spring for the 256gb model, which i don't blame you for.

Also apparently the Zenbook prime has a really small version of an msata SSD so it's not even upgradable (unless you can source a 256gb one from another zenbook). Anyway I bought a 64GB SDXC card so i'll post back if it works.

Cool good luck with it, those things are cool looking notebooks, i bet they're pretty awesome in person, i would love to see one.

So apparently the Zenbook prime only has a half depth SD card slot... waste of $60 on that SDXC card...lol. At least somebody might find this thread and know not to try it themselves.
