Dang, I'm still using the same computer?

Thread Starter
Through a series of laptops in College, I have somehow neglected to update my main rig for about... 4 years...

yea, I'm still using (what used to be great) but what is now pretty trash tongue.gif Why is it that computers slow down over time?

Anyways, I DO have a 1 TB hard drive in it, but thats the only change tongue.gif I'm thinking of giving it a spinal/heart transplant,
by throwing in a new Mobo +CPU + RAM.

Do you think I could get noticeable improvement for less than $500? Or at that budget should I wait a few pay checks?

Thanks,
Venar the Returning Enthusiast

Absolutely.  Here is a motherboard/CPU/memory combo that I just threw together purely as an example (not as recommendations) just to show that it can be done without putting much thought into it:

P8Z77-V Pro for $209.99 shipped

3570K for $229.99 shipped

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR3-1866 for $57.99 shipped

Total:  $497.97

I didn't shop around or have any concern about prices.  I just picked these 3 because to start with, I would personally want this motherboard and CPU, and the other thing is I own this memory and I love it. hehe  So yeah, I put it together in my head after reading your post before I looked up these parts on Newegg.  :)

However, I would also want to replace the video card and PSU.  My reason for replacing the PSU is for overclocking because I have a feeling this one doesn't have a clean and stable enough power delivery for it.  However, the 3570K at stock is already amazing...

Edit:  if I were to buy the P8Z77-V Pro and 3570K together at Micro Center, then I'd spend exactly $90 less because the 3570K is going for $189.99, and then when the P8Z77-V Pro is purchased with the 3570K, they drop the price on that motherboard down to $159.99.  So buying them together from Newegg costs $439.98 while Micro Center would charge just $349.98.

I second two cables suggestions above, and a few paychecks down the line you can pick up an ssd and graphics card to complement your main components upgrade.
Keep your eye open for the 660ti, or maybe a gtx 480/7850 if you want something cheaper and more available. I just got a samsung 830 ssd, but I know that the crucial m4 is also a really popular ssd as well. I think you'll notice the ssd upgrade a lot thumb.gif

In my opinion the PSU is already pretty decent. For example, for i5 (moderate OC) + 7850 (OC + overvolt) aout 450W is adequate so I would say 580W is just about right for CPU + single GPU with some spare headroom in case you end up using particularly powerhungry fan or want to add some watercooling, etc.

As far as upgrade goes if your budget is 500 you can beef up stuff pretty well. I would say something on the lines of ~200$ for GPU (I heard 660Ti was supposed to release around that price somewhere) or if you prefer AMD then 7850 might be had around that price as well, then throw in some reasonably cheap z68 or Z77 chipset motherboards (can be had for less than 100$) and top it off with i5 and 8GB (or more if you still have funds left) of DDR3.

I'm not talking about its capacity.  wink.gif

Like I said, I am doubting that the quality of its power delivery is clean and stable enough for overclocking.  For stock, yeah I think it might be trustworthy, but I don't know beyond that.  I'd have to turn to the experts.

I also second what TwoCables posted but this mobo has all the necessary features while only being $134.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157293 You will be able to save a few $$$ and get a head start on a PSU and GPU upgrade.

Thanks for the quick replies, I'm not surprised the community is still just as active as it was years ago smile.gif

I just got this PSU from a friend
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341002

So hopefully I wont need to upgrade the PSU.

I'm not a huge gamer anymore, but I am into high def movies, torrenting, and using the computer for audio recording and manipulation. So I think that Graphics Card will not be "super" important to me,
whereas RAM and CPU are probably going to help the most.

Does that add up with you guys?

Ps, I'm looking at the links you guys provided, I'm a little surprised that the ASUS mobo is over $200, isn't that a lot for a mobo?

Not a huge fan of OCZ PSUs, but for the money (thanks to the friend) is great!

This is an enthusiast board, aimed more towards overclocking and having an onboard wifi card.

If you are not interested to spend as much, there are decent boards from Asus / Gigabyte / Asrock that can still pool a respectful O/C and will set you back in the $120-140 range, still featuring the Z77 chipset, but dropping a bit on added features and probably VRM quality.
Keep in mind that prices flying around are before tax, so if you have a hard ceiling @ $500, take it into consideration.
