[Wired] How Apple and Amazon Security Flaws Led to My Epic Hacking

In the space of one hour, my entire digital life was destroyed. First my Google account was taken over, then deleted. Next my Twitter account was compromised, and used as a platform to broadcast racist and homophobic messages. And worst of all, my AppleID account was broken into, and my hackers used it to remotely erase all of the data on my iPhone, iPad, and MacBook.

This is why I refuse to link all my online accounts together. If one gets compromised, then many of them will. Also, back in the day when Google banned people's accounts from G+ for not using their real name and suddenly they lost access to their Gmail and YouTube accounts too. All my various online and "cloud" accounts are from different providers and not linked together at all.

Interesting read..Good reason not to have the same password on every account as well. This is exactly why I don't link accounts too. But in my opinion he shouldn't have dropped charges, that was stupid on his part.

Had I been regularly backing up the data on my MacBook, I wouldn’t have had to worry about losing more than a year’s worth of photos, covering the entire lifespan of my daughter

That part gets to me. When his daughter grows up there's going to be over a year of her life missing from her photo album...

Glad I don't use cloud services, and also glad that I just put my old Caviar Black in my rig as a back up drive.

wasnt there another thread that said the hackers social engineered to get apple to give them access to the cloud, then the hackers found all of his other accounts/password in his apple cloud? so why is amazon to blame for this that he's stupid enough to put all his passwords in one place and apple's stupid enough to give it away
