VPN Killing Internet Connectivity

Hey guys,

I have a VPN set up from my home office to work. When I'm only using this one computer I can connect to the VPN and browse around just fine. However, when I use my laptop (or any other device) that is NOT connected to the VPN it kills my internet connectivity across my entire network. The current applications I'm running still work (voip doesn't disconnect, I can still stay connected to any online games) but any new connections tried time out, like when I try to open a new webpage it just times out.

I have updated the latest firmware for my router and have applied correct VPN passthrough settings in my router.

I'm just not sure that as soon as any device connects to my home-network while I'm already using VPN it kills my internet connection.

I've also been having issues where the symptoms just seem like bad routing and I have to reset my router (not my modem) to fix it.

Any help?

Router is an Asus n56u

what sort of vpn are you using? also what is the vpn set up like?

if the vpn is on your gateway what it is probably doing is redirecting all traffic down the vpn thus killing your network, if its just you using the vpn (asuuming it is set up on the gateway) it would be better to set it up on your machine which needs to connect to it rather than everyone

The VPN IS L2TP - it is actually on a Mac (work computer). I have set both IPSEC pass through and L2TP passthrough on my router. The "Send all traffic through VPN" option is NOT checked so I'd assume that it is not redirecting all traffic down the VPN link.

What's happening is - I can not connect to any webpages or make any new connections but my existing virtual conference room (with streaming voice, desktop sharing, and video streaming) is still connected and works just fine - but again I can not do anything else new.

I have to reboot the router in order for things to start functioning again.

I'd do a traceroute to a destination WAN IP to see if it's pointing the default route through the VPN or not.

The issue is only when any wireless connections access the network while my work computer is using the VPN over the router. Any clients connected directly to the modem are unaffected.

Not sure!
