Laptop memory quandries

So I've got an asus k53sv

i7-2670qm
4gb ram ddr3 1333hz
1gb gt 540m
replaced hdd with ssd m4 256gb

Now, I was playing l4d2 the other day at the native 1366x768 res with med/high specs. Windows suddenly popped up and said I'm lacking memory and then auto-killed the game. I had chrome+vuze with nothing dling up at the same time. I don't remember it happening prior to the os re-install and the ssd, so I was wondering if there was something I did wrong during the installation etc, or whether I'm really just lacking the ram to run l4d2 and a couple chrome windows with 4gb ram? I'm never under 1.3gb ram in use with NOTHING open. Is that typical? chrome gets me close to 2.5. I ordered 8gb of crucial ram but I'm just curious if there is some memory leak or something going on because I don't remember l4d2 being such a taxing game in the past. Plus the game should be able to run on a comp with 1gb ram according to steam spec info, so I just found it hard to accept that it wasn't getting by on 4gb. Thanks for any suggestions and input in advace!

well 1.3gb for just windows, seems about right? I think its usually between 1.1-1.3gb memory for default windows installs.

RIgh't now I have 5 chrome tabs open, and chrome has 10 chrome.exe's running in the process' list, and theyre using anywhere from 53,000k to 163,000k

But still 4gb of ram should be enough. did you download and verify optimus is working properly? I assume that laptop has it with that GPU?

Do I have to download optimus specifically or is it just part of the nvidia installation? I mean l4d2 played relatively well so I assumed it was using the 540m. I did have a lot of chrome tabs open so it is possible that more ram that I thought was being used. Hopefully upgrading to 8gb fixes the issue.

That is weird. Did you follow some SSD guide that told you to disable pagefile? If so, do NOT disable it.

Ooh, I did disable page file! I think I saw that in some optimization guide i used. So you're saying that is probably the issue then? Thanks, I'll turn it back on. What exactly is page file and how does it help?

What is the Pagefile and what does it do?
The pagefile is a sort of backup for data put in physical memory (RAM).
It is put into one file called pagefile.sys.
When you start Windows or launch a program that programs important files are put into RAM because RAM is faster than a hard drive. “When the memory in use (that is, has been reference) by all the existing processes exceeds the amount of RAM available, the operating system will move pages (4 KB pieces) of one or more virtual address spaces to the computer’s hard disk, thus freeing some RAM for other uses. In Windows systems, these “paged out” pages are stored in one or more files with the name pagefile.sys.”

http://www.tweakhound.com/2011/10/10/the-windows-7-pagefile-and-running-without-one/

Anyways, I have 8GB RAM in both my desktop and laptop, but I still have a 1024MB page file on my SSDs. With 4GB RAM, you may want at least a 2GB page file. Back in the day with windows XP (and lots less RAM), I remember always being recommended to have 1.5x pagefile vs. RAM, so if you had 1GB Ram, run 1.5GB page file. Today, with everyone having at least 4GB RAM, it is probably not needed to have that much of a page file. The most RAM I have seen my PC used was nearly 6GB, so I still had plenty of room left. With only 4GB RAM, you probably hit your max and had no page file to help out the load.

Any good guides on-site regarding installing laptop memory. Is it just a matter of throwing the sticks in, or do I have to perform some bios/cmos/os magic for it to work?

Unplug the laptop, remove the battery, then unscrew the cover with the memory icon, I assume its on the bottom anyhow...

Then slide the new memory stick in at an angle, then press down and it should latch without much force.

I would recommend buying a matched 8gb kit, or try to get something exactly like whats in there by searching the part number on the memory module. I've had laptops that got major BSODs with mixed memory, but runs fine with a new matched pair... go figure...
