Yeah, there are many people who have like 1200W PSUs who really only need like a 400-500W PSU. I am seeing too many people these days who have just one simple video card in a very simple setup, but yet they power it with like a top-of-the-line 1200W power supply. They say they want room for upgrades, but damn. All that does is it sends a message to others that a 1200W must be needed these days for simple systems like that.
Almost any system that has 1-2 video cards doesn't need much more than a good quality 650W power supply on average. There are exceptions where only a 450-550W power supply is needed, and also where a 750W would be needed, but I'm just talking more about the average. I would even go as far as saying that having 1-2 of the absolute latest generation video cards with the latest generation of CPU would really only need a 450-550W power supply depending on whether it's 1-2 cards. They are getting less and less power-hungry.
Some might say I'm recommending that people get the bare minimum, but I'm not.
