[TH] - No Booting Straight to Desktop in Windows 8

Thread Starter
Quote:
CNET reports that users of the recently-leaked RTM builds of Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 have discovered that one of the tweaks Microsoft has made since the launch of the last public test build, Windows 8 Release Preview, centers on the boot process. Microsoft is reportedly now blocking users from bypassing the boxy Start screen, preventing them from booting straight into Desktop mode.

Previous test builds allowed Windows 8 users to create a shortcut that switches to the Windows 8 desktop. If the user didn't want to boot their machine into the tiled desktop UI (formerly known as Metro), they could simply schedule this shortcut to be activated immediately after logging into the user's account.

Source.

Microsoft is determined to shove this "once-called-Metro" interface down new computer buyer's throats. To all those that said you could live without it, even though you had to go through a convoluted process to get Windows 8 to boot to the desktop, now that too is gone.

This only makes my original choice of not buying Windows 8 stronger. Stop trying to be Apple, Microsoft.

Yes, it is.

If it isn't such a big deal, how come Microsoft intentionally went out of their way to REMOVE the ability.

I can be even more bull-headed that Microsoft when it comes to this issue. Not only did they have to spend money to REMOVE this ability, they will loose ALL the money that me and my company would have gotten from upgrades, because as Director of Computer Operations, I have made the decision to NOT ALLOW any Windows 8 machine in my shop unless I can bypass Metro directly.

As the old saying goes ...

"If you aren't going to take care of your customer, some other company will."

1/10, will not buy. I was in full support of W8 and was going to buy it since there were plenty of ways to bypass Metro. Now, I'll probably just grab it free with my college's Dreamspark account to try it, and toss it out if there is no way around the Metro UI.

It's not that it's a big deal or not to hit a single button to go to the desktop, it's just the fact that people oppose MS forcing what they believe is "the right UI" on the users. It is pretty Apple-esque and they dislike that approach. The argument can go both ways: Why do the customers make a big deal about it? Well, why does Microsoft make a big deal about it by forcing it down our throats?

When you first start W8, you should be given the option of temporarily trying out the new UI (you'd be asked upon next boot what you want to do), disabling it entirely on the spot, or making it the default interface. Regardless, someone will eventually find a way to delete "Metro" from the equation.
