Yes, I know, and I quoted the relevant part ... since people here only really case about their Desktop/Laptop computers, not their handheld device.

Apple gained 3/4's of 1 percent and Microsoft lost less than that ... for their DESKTOP OPERATING SYSTEM.

Who cares about iOS for the purposes of this discussion. No one is talking about upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8 on their Zune on this thread. Stop being obtuse.

I'm not talking about iOS, I'm not sure why you keep bringing it up. Both of us have been quoting stats about OS X.

OS X specifically has gained 3% worldwide marketshare in just the last few years, and it's gained that by taking it from Windows, in North America those numbers are even greater. I'm sure Microsoft's changes to Windows 8 are mostly in response to the mobile market, but the fact that they're losing desktop marketshare, and at the same time desktops are becoming less relevant to many consumers, is part of it.

And "obtuse"? Really? For that you get a month in the hole. After that we'll see if you think I'm being obtuse.

Meh, I'll wait for Windows 9. Windows 8 is due to be the garbage version any way and I always skip every other version of Windows.

I can't believe I went to bed and this thread is still going...

Basically, some people will like Win8 and others won't. Neither party is wrong, the problem here is you got people stating their opinions as facts which gets some people frustrated. If you use both OSes as they were intended to be used, both of them are good. If you keep using Win8 with your old Win7 habits, yes it's going to give you a bad experience. Win8 has newer features which give it the edge for me. Someone saying Win8 is bad is a dense person in my eyes. If it wasn't for metro I feel that nearly everyone would say it's much better than Win7. Metro does not automatically make the OS bad, it makes the user dense for not being able/willing to adjust to new things. It has it's pros and it's cons. It works almost identically to the start menu, and let's be realistic, how often were you in the start menu anyway?

I still feel the whole Win8 hate train is caused by:

80% - People that are simply bored and have very limited or no experience with Win8. They form their opinions based on other people's statements that are also part of this "hate train". Chances are many of these people will actually like the OS when they give it a try. I was part of this group before I got my hands on RTM.

20% - People that have actually tested the OS and prefer the old start menu so much that they prefer Win7. Legit preference, but in no way does it make Win8 a bad OS. I still feel these people should adjust because chances are this new interface is here to stay. Do you really want to be one of those people that are still on WinXP and claiming it's superior? In 10 years, I really hope these people are still not using Win7 if windows never goes back to the start menu.

Then quote the article that says they gained 3% (or more in North America).

The article that YOU LINKED, and I QUOTED, said 3/4ths of 1 percent.

So don't get all huffy when I quote back the numbers of the article that YOU linked.

Besides, after a month in the hole, I get to live in Mexico with nearly a million dollars, and you get to eat a bullet. wink.gif

I love that movie.

And what will you do when Win9 continues the trend of "metro"? People hated Vista for it's looks too but guess what...Win7 is Vista 2.0! People complained about MSOffice's changes in 2007 and guess what? They're using it or 2010. People like complaining because it's easier than doing anything about the situation.

Of course the number in my meme was made up. It was used to poke fun at your 0.1% "made up" number.

And where did you pull the "more than 7 million people" number from? Yet another made up number I'm guessing.

But yes, people just want something that works, and something that they don't have to totally relearn how to use just because Microsoft unilaterally decided that Metro was better. If people are going to be forced to relearn how they operate a computer, then why not relearn on something that is FREE ... ie Linux.

Which is the point I and man others here (and in many linked in articles) are saying.
My "fake" statistic. 0.1% of the world =7 million people. Only cos it's true and doesn't help prove your point.

FAR more people will get Metro better than the normal desktop, especially in tablets. The majority of the population is dumb.

OS X has gone up 0.25% in just the last month. No it's not a lot, but OS X has gone up 3 percent in the last couple of years, and it's nearing 13% in the US now, way up from a few years ago.

Mac OS X (now called plain ol' OS X) share is 6.72 percent at the end of June, which is up 0.75 percent from the year ago period.

The Windows share fell a bit, from 92.90 percent in June 2011 to 92.23 in the current month.

Most likely, if Microsoft forces Metro down peoples throat, that 3/4th of 1 percent will be MUCH higher.

When it comes to Desktop OS's, Microsoft stands to LOSE a lot more than they will gain.

Again, your article show's the gains Apple is making i OSX -AND- iOS ... most of their gains are in iOS, which has NOTHING to do with the Desktop. Which is why I and others think that Microsoft is STUPID to basically tie the Desktop and Mobile OS's together. Not even Apple is that dumb.

Again, completely biased against Metro. Believe it or not, most IT departments (like my school's) are run by complete crackheads and one smart person in the team.

Actually, people hated Vista for technical reasons. The look is pretty much the same as XP and 7. And I don't know about you, but I run 7 in "Classic View". If Windows 8 had "Classic View", this entire discussion wouldn't be happening.

As far as 2007/2010, maybe you are late to the thread, but we've already covered this. Plenty of people are still on 2003, and plenty of others have switched to Open Office and Libre. There are roughly 11 million Open Office users in the US alone. Microsoft and "Ribbon" have cost themselves MILLIONS of users and billions of dollars.
