"Look babe, you can now just open your facebook right from logon without typing anything, everything opens full screen for you like you do anyway, and if you really want the OLD Windows back, just click this button here!".

"Why in the heck would I want a phone on my computer screen?"
My GF is one of the LEAST technologically inclined people I've met. Before she met me, she had never even used a computer outside of her high school's library. Her phone was her internet. You would have thought that since she was SO used to her Android she'd welcome this.
But no, even she hated it. She begged for me to put the little glowy thing in the corner back on (start menu).
_______________
I then showed her my Ubuntu (99% vanilla) install. She could use it immediately, and didn't complain once about the interface. Its slightly different from Windows...sure, but its not a phone.
TL-DR:
Even your non tech people are going to hate Windows 8, because they don't want their PC to be like a phone.

Yep, my missus said the exact same thing! Though, she also asked which dumb [expletive] thought it was a good idea wink.gif

How I wish i could rep you. I did the same with my wife, she instantly hated it. "take this stupid thing away now and put the start button back" "wish I could babe" redface.gif

When it first came out, I held a "windows 8 challenge" for buddies who hadn't tried it out (this was on my current rig, not a vm, on a separate partition), the challenge was see if you can last 5 minutes without getting frustrated and rage quitting. No one's won yet. rolleyes.gif

And, you would be wrong. After it releases to shelves in stores, nobody will even know what Metro is. OCN will be replacing "Metro" with "Start Menu" in all of their posts. Why? Because that's what its called. I don't usually call a dog a cat.

Personally, I think the whole "We are going to stop calling it Metro because we are being sued by the German version of Walmart" excuse is just that ... and excuse. No way that Microsoft would lose that battle in court.

I personally think that Metro has gotten such a well deserved negative reputation, they just want to throw the name out and hope that people think that Windows 8 doesn't ship with that horrible user interface, by renaming it.

Something like that just might work for the stupid masses. Those of us who know better, well, no comment.

For $40 I'll be picking it up, I feel like it'll go the vista route with a rocky start getting more negative reviews that it deserves but end up being a pretty good os.

Who are you to call people dense ? Are you going to call those people who helped Microsoft introduce all those changes that made Metro somewhat better since the Developer Preview also dense ? Because, of, course, Microsoft had the perfect Windows ever since they named it Windows 8 and you guys all embraced the word "change" as something supposedly epic and good by itself with no further need to actually deliver good substance, as if you were going to run for president of something. Please.
And all the while you still insist on classifying what I stated as facts as opinion and that you categorically failed to counter-argument, running around with empty rhetoric that I was trying to use Windows 8 as Windows 7, all the while not providing one single workaround to make Windows 8 as productive as Windows 7, even going to the irony of suggesting I use Windows 8 as Windows 7, but then accusing me of wanting to do that when you mentioned it yourself.
And don't make up statistics out of your head, everybody can come up with their own completely baseless numbers.
By making up fake statistics and labelling people that don't like Windows 8 by saying that they think the OS is overall bad is also completely FALSE. Ask people who have used the OS and ask them what they think of the under the hood improvements. Of course they are good.
Whether you think that the pros outweigh the cons is your opinion, mine is completely opposite. That yes, is an opinion.

If you take offense to me saying you are dense for claiming Win8 is bad just because of metro, then whatever. In my opinion there's no other way to describe a person that wants to call something bad just because there's 1 or 2 things they don't like about it. Windows 8 is a great OS, while some may prefer Win7's start menu, Win8 is still a step forward in pretty much every department. The only thing keeping some people from liking it is metro, something that you will view maybe a couple minutes a day.

This will be my last post in the thread, I really see no reason to keep discussing this. No opinions are going to be changed. If some people want to stay on older software just because of metro, then that's their choice. I will enjoy Win8 because I am willing to adjust to new software, this type of interface is probably not going anywhere anytime soon. I'm not going to sit on Win7 for the next decade and hope for them to go back to the normal start menu. Metro is not as bad as some people make it out to be, and everything else about the OS is far better. Give it a year and there will be plenty of people using Win8.
