[i5-2500k] Safe Temps?

Thread Starter
Hello and good day everyone! I just recently tried my hand at over clocking and am the definition of a newb, but I believe I ran into some issues while trying to establish a 4.5 GHz over clock on my 2500k. Within the first five minutes of a stress test with Prime95 my CPU hit 65C, and that worries me as I read somewhere on these forums that 65C is quite hot for a CPU, am I just being dumb? I do have an after market cooler as you can see below, so my first though was maybe I applied the thermal paste wrong when I put this rig together? I just wanted the opinions of OC veterans before I tried anything stupid. All replies appreciated, screenies below.

Here is my rig:

Note: I noticed my bus speed and multiplier fluctuating during tests with Prime95, is this also normal?

These temps are extremely safe, but they are high for this overclock and voltage.  When you applied the thermal paste, did you apply it first in between the gaps of the exposed pipes like the link below?

http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=150&Itemid=62&limit=1&limitstart=5

If not, then I recommend doing it or else you may be limited by heat.

Even so, these temps are about 30 degrees away from the approximate maximum safe temperature (technically speaking).  Even those temps would technically be safe, but it might be hard to reach them due to the instability that would be caused by the extra heat.  ;)

Also, if your system happens to be in an enclosed area like a deskhole, then that's bad too.  Otherwise, the above stuff are the only concerns I can think of.

The fluctuations are very normal, yep!

Thanks for the reply! I think the thermal paste is where I went wrong then, I just applied a small pea on the center of my CPU and spread it around with my finger in a plastic bag, if that makes you cringe, I'm sorry, but I was just following the instructions on this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_56kyib-Ls

(The part where he applies thermal paste is around 17:20)

That made me cringe quite a bit!  Yikes!

Nah, I'm only kidding.  Your temps are safe, so it's not an emergency, but if you don't do it then you won't be able to overclock very high at all.  I mean, I'm doubting that you'll be able to reach even 4.3 to 4.4 GHz with comfy temps.

Alright, well thank you very much, I appreciate the lightning fast responses! I will be applying thermal paste again, and hopefully I will achieve better results.

Well, it seems that my problem has only gotten worse. After re-applying the thermal paste it seems that my temperatures have not improved, and have actually worsened. :/

New Idle: http://i.imgur.com/d2e1F.png

New Full Load: http://i.imgur.com/4EeLC.png

When applying the thermal paste I first cleaned off both the base of the heatsink as well as the back of the CPU with Rubbing Alcohol(50%) using Q-Tips to wipe the gunk off, then I applied the thermal paste in strips between the heatpipes and finally I spread it around with my finger inside a plastic bag and evened out the surface with a used giftcard.

Is there anything that I may have done wrong?
Don't spread it around with your finger after you've filled in the gaps, just use a pea size in the center and it will spread itself when you install the heatsink

Or you can do the two short lines method as specified in that website that was linked

Alright, will do, I just hope I can manage to do this the right way before I run out of thermal paste or Q-Tips.

Well, it seems that I can't really bring the temps down more than what they were initially at, I'm really at a loss of what to do, I re-applied thermal paste twice, using the method EyesDilated mentioned to no avail, could something else be causing this? I live in Texas, and right now it's boiling hot outside, although I have good air conditioning that puts my room temp at about 76 F, I also didn't buy any fans in addition to the stock ones that came with my case. Am I making too big a deal of this?

Don't use Q-tips..use a coffee filter..Q-tips can leave hairs and make a gap..also..small pea-size of TIM and smoosh it down.
That's a pretty beefy-looking cooler..I think you should be getting better temps.Your ambient is lower than mine..Mine is 79
