Someone tell me the difference low sense/high sensitivity gaming?

At this point in time I'm not sure what that means anymore. It seems DPI settings in gaming has become a science...mouse companies are coming out with crazy DPI settings like the sensei's 11400 or so - why?

To me that settings like that has no practical use, unless I have a multiple monitor setup. Is that what it's for, because now I'm hearing about people cranking the DPI all the way up in game and turning the in game sensitivity down. What does that do? Because to me thats the same thing as keeping the in game sensitivity at default and using a lower DPI setting.

Can someone clear this up?

It's mostly just marking tactics, to try and make the relation of more DPI = better. And thusly try to get you thinking that you need to buy our new 10000 DPI mouse for $200 cause it'll make you pwn noobs like never before.

I never used anything more than 1800dpi, today I wonder how I even could use such high dpi, no wonder I sucked in games or complained about that I couldn't put sensitivity lower in-game and always misclicked in Windows.
With 450dpi right now I'm super precise with clicking tiny links and buttons on web sites and can go as low as I want in the in-game sensitivity settings and use around 17cm for a 180° turn (wanted to use 20cm, but mat is too small and I have not enough space, so 17cm is a compromize).

High dpi has no practical use for me. 1800dpi, the high sensitivity debut of the last decade wasn't even necessary for me. Instead of high dpi, companies should make super quality laser sensors with no prediction, acceleration and what not.


There are people who ask for really high dpi. It is beyond my imagination what they can do with it. Go to Windows mouse control and set mouse speed to 2/11 thinking they get best performance? I understand an Eyefinity system might be better to handle with a slightly faster mouse, but 8200dpi??

So the way it works is that the mouse has a built in dpi, for how many pixels it will move across the screen for every inch you move it on the mousepad. Game sensitivity adjusts this by using an algorithm to adjust the "effective dpi" by skipping pixels or keeping the cursor on the same pixel. This mainly helps with some non-adjustable dpi mice being able to have approximately the dpi one wants but comes at the cost of accuracy. For example, 6/11 mouse speed is standard windows mouse speed, but 8/11 is double speed, skipping every other pixel on the screen to make the mouse appear to be acting as if there was double the dpi.

With that being said, it makes no sense to turn the dpi really high and game sensitivity really low since that would be less accurate than having ideal dpi and then game sensitivity off/default. For competitive gaming, I've seen as high as 3000s (but normally closer to 2000) for professional RTS like starcraft where speed is more important that accuracy, but in fps games, usually dpi is below 1000 to allow for longer (and thus more accurate) movements. Anything over 3500 dpi is really just marketing hype and has no practical purpose as you'll see most pro gamers using standard high dpi optical (at least in sc2) with 3500 max dpi, which is then tuned down.

With that being said, mice are supposedly less accurate at the edges of its dpi range, so if you plan on using 1800, maybe 2500+dpi maximum is what you should be looking for if you're a really serious/professional gamer.

The theoretical max dpi (sensitivity) of a sensor is irrelevant once it exceeds the capabilities of the "analog" interface - aka your hand.
No hand can do consistent movements with accuracy down to 1/10000 of an inch (or 1/5000 for what matters).
Having a consistent mouse that tracks well on multiple surfaces and textures, or does not cripple itself with a couple of tiny dust particles is much more important than the max theoretical output of its sensor.

It is close to marketing screens with more than 200-300ppi or printers with even more than that...its either a lie (marketing trick not responding to the "same dpi" aka distinct dots per inch witch the human eye cannot distinguish past 300/in) or overkill, especially if you factor in the average viewing distance.

there are many reasons why people use either low or high sensitivity. i use low sensativity for precision and ease of use. it is entirely down to personal preference.

In theory you get more precision with high DPI and low sensitivity in shooter games. In reality it's better to use reasonable DPI at which mouse works good and adjust sensitivity to taste.
