Can't get HP printer to work. Help?

So I made a clean install on a somewhat old computer, installed Windows XP SP3 and so far, so good, except for one thing...

I can't get the printer to work!

It's an HP OfficeJet 4255. I already tried the drivers from here, but it seems like it's a self-extracting file that does nothing. I tried running it, it says it's extracting the files, but after that, nothing happens. Not even in safe mode!

What can I do to have it running? Any ideas? I can't find the disc that came with it.

Once you extracted the files, did you go to the folder it unpacked them in to see if there's an application file?

Also, it refers to "HP Officejet and PSC Basic Software and Driver". Have you tried this for basic printing functions?

Downloaded both. The self-extractor never indicated where the files were extracted to, so I have no idea whatsoever about where to look.

Well, I didn't actually run the software, but I was able to download it.

I didn't use the "Download" button, but just click on the linkable filename "gc_w01_ENU_NB.exe" under Details and specifications.

You should get the option to run or save. I just saved it to a folder. Once done, you can just click on the executable and it runs just as if you had the installation CD in there.

Okay, I downloaded as I described above, saved it to my desktop. Double-clicked it and it took about 20 seconds to extract. Upon completion of this, it started installation and went to a "Welcome to the Install Wizard for HP All-In-One Series" screen.

I don't know what else to tell you. It looks exactly the same as every other HP printer install I've done (and we have 49 locations that I maintain that use them).

It did take about 5 seconds after the extraction for the wizard to start.

This may sound silly, but given your location, I assume your OS language is not set to english?

I don't know if it would make a difference, but since you can't change the installation language, what about switching your OS to english and trying to install?

I found some threads on the interwebs that seem to refer to this, but have never had the problem myself. It's some kind of conflict that I know nothing about.

Anywho...figured it might be worth a shot.

You have Windows 7 listed in your sig rig... why don't you just use the drivers windows already has installed when you go to add a printer? Click on Windows Update if you don't see it listed and I'm sure it will get it. Windows 7 makes printer installs so simple.
