New home server, Music/Video/Pictures/Games

Hey guys,
I'm fairly new to the forums here and I've only been reading around a bit.

I am looking to build a new home server because the one im using now (Old Acer Aspire 3400+, 1.8Ghz single core LOL) is starting to die on me.

I have about a $700-800 budget not including HDD's or a SSD (I already own some)

This is what ive been looking at:

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1245 V2 or i3 2130 (8MB L3 vs 2 x 256KB L2 + 3MB L3, not sure what to pick here)
MOBO: SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCL-F-O LGA 1155 Intel C202 or ASRock H77M LGA 1155 Intel H77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0
RAM: Kingston 8GB DDR3 1333 ECC Unbuffered or G.Skill RipJaws 8GB DDR3 1600
PSU: Antec EarthWatts Green EA-380D
SSD: Crucial RealSSD C300 128Gb (Sata 2 and I already have it laying around)

Case: Fractal Design Define Mini Black Micro ATX or a Lian-Li case
Needs to have an intake in the front and exhaust in the back/top because it will be sitting in a shelf will walls both left and right.

I am flipping back and forth between the i3 and the Xeon, I like having 8 cores but I also don't want the thing to melt/die.

I will probably be running this server 24/7 at home.
My dad likes to keep his music on here and we then stream it to a logitech squeezebox touch, which works beautifuly.

I also wanna run a minecraft server for a few freinds of mine. At most we will have maybe 15 players on at once. My internet is about 20Mb down and 4-5Mb up.

Since Minecraft is a single thread app, would it be more benificial to get the i3? Or does the L3 cache make a big difference???

Also I plan on using Ubuntu Server

Let me know what you guys think. What can I do better or what should I change?
Also will ECC ram help, or make a big difference???

Thanks!

Edit: Actually a 1.8Ghz single core at 69W (This thing used to be my gaming rig...)

Whoa that E3 chip is a monstrosity, I see how that chip can fit in well with what you are intending to do with the server, but keep in mind "power consumption" You'd want something which doesn't consume a lot of power since you have intentions of running it 24/7, I really want a server but I don't get around to pulling out those misplaced components around the house.

For a home server I would want a small case, for personal conveniences when relocating the server something like a bitfenix progidy
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-074-BX
That case features carrying handles and I think It's quite small to, and due to it's design upgrades should be very easy.

And it also depends on what you wish to "fork" out, that E3 appears to be wonderful chip but what are It's power consumptions?

I'm not really experienced in running servers so I don't know much about what components will be useful when creating and running a server, I think you'd want 8 or more GB of ram and possibly at 1600MHz, I used to run a Minecraft server on my PC with my friends It was pretty demanding and wanted a lot of my ram, In the end I gave it a reserve of 2GB ram and it ran quite good on my PC.

How does your current server perform and what problems do you run into when running it? Minecraft servers utilize a lot of cores I think I used Bukkit on mine It probably uses up to 4 cores and possibly more.

Does streaming data and transfering consume alot of your system resources especially CPU and ram?
If it consumes alot of ram I suggest high speed DD3 with good timings as I suggested before a 1600MHZ or more.

Your old CPU in that server must reach 100% easily also, an I3 would be basic for a server but if you wish to multitask with your server and run minecraft I think It would be better to get an I5, the E3 may be a bit "overkill"

Oh and I think an SSD would come in handy and should shorten transfer rates dramatically.
Oh I just looked at that CPU again, I didn't notice you choose the V2, that's surely overkill never mind "a bit"
How much is it from where you intend to buy it from?

Really? Because I like overkill. =D

The server cpu im running now (AMD Sempron 3400+ 1.8Ghz) is a 69W CPU where the Xeon E3-1245 is a 77W. I don't think the power consumption difference here is too big.

Can't say the same for my 135W Phenom x4 *facepalm*
I used to run a server on this with 16GB 1600MHZ ram and the server did alright (I think it was mostly my connection)

The reason im opting for the E3 is because it is comparably cheap, and it should last me quite some time.

As far as relocating the server that probably wont happen haha, once it's in the shelf it probably wont move for a few months or a year.
I'm currently off at college and this thing sits at home with my parents.

Didn't know Bukkit was multi thread, if that was the case then the E3 would be better than the i3.

Ohh yea and SSD is a must. I am a speed freak and I can't stand the wait time before opening stuff on a mechanical drive.

My mom has an i7 laptop with 8gb ram, 2gb graphics and the thing, in my opinion, is slow. Make me want to dropkick something.

Hmmmmmmm why an i5??? I don't need the integrated gpu, that's just a waste of Watts. 0_o

"My mom has an i7 laptop with 8gb ram, 2gb graphics and the thing, in my opinion, is slow. Make me want to dropkick something."
LOL!

"Hmmmmmmm why an i5??? I don't need the integrated gpu, that's just a waste of Watts. 0_o" I was suggesting an I5 to keep the cost down a little, but wasting watts is a big problem so I guess It's not a good Idea.

"Didn't know Bukkit was multi thread, if that was the case then the E3 would be better than the i3." I just read something and I dont think It is whoops sorry, but I swear It was using more than one of my CPUs, hmm I'll have to look into that.

I've always had mechanical drives, to me SSDs sound pretty good I'll have to invest in one someday, right now I was looking at building a server and I think an SSD or caching SSD would be Ideal for one.

Intergrating raid should be useful, and terrabytes, loads of terrabytes biggrin.gif can't get enough of them!

Haha yea TB's are goooooood. I think I might buy 1-2 caviar blacks and put them in raid (1?). As far as bukkit goes I'm 75% sure one core is for the server and the other is for garbage collection. Hopefully they make it multi-threaded some day, but I think that will be pretty hard.

Also I just saw that the new Ivy i5 only runs on 77W so that's the same as the E3-1245 V2. Yay for 22nm die sizes. The i5 is about $70 bucks cheaper and comes with HD2500, and 6MB of L3.

I really wish I knew how much of a difference 2MB of L3 makes? Integrated GPU is not a must since I have a spare Gt8600 laying around that I can use just for the OS install. Gonna SSH from there on.

Also ECC Ram??? I heard it's usefull for 24/7 servers.
Well according to Wikipedia ECC is Error Correction Ram, I don't think I've never used one but I can possibly see how It can be useful in a server as It corrects errors possibly in real-time so you wont have any freezes or something like that.

L3 Is suppose ably the fastest microkernel, I've also noticed that that E3 only uses the "AVX, SSE4.1,SSE4.2" instruction sets, I'm not entirely sure but compatibility problems may occur whilst trying to run certain applications, you should ask around on the forums before purchasing that chip my CPU has MMX(+) 3DNOW!(+) sse(1, 2, 3, 4A), 86.64. AMD.V.
Considerably a lot more instruction sets, this is making me cautious of that Chip.

And yes Raid 1 is supposed to be for mirroring a set of data on two discs. I've never used Raid before so I don't know how you set it up.

Hmm what website are you using? I got this for the 1245 using cpu-world

MMX instruction set
SSE
SSE2
SSE3
Supplemental SSE3
SSE4.1
SSE4.2
AES instructions
Advanced Vector Extensions
Extended Memory 64 technology (EM64T)
Execute disable bit
Virtualization technology (VT-x / VT-d)
Turbo Boost technology 2.0
Trusted Execution technology
HyperThreading technology

I'm actually thinking about going down to the 1230, save 50 bucks and buy some extra fans for the case, or get another 8GB of RAM.

Yea ECC ram sounds usefully but idk if I will get so much out of it. I might make a Ramdisk for the MC server portion since I don't want to torture my SSD 24/7.
(Maybe this will prevent something like chunk errors? I think im just making up stuff now.)

But yea thanks for your advice so far. I'll have to do some more thinking.

Haha no problem, I was using Intel's website "http://ark.intel.com/products/65729/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E3-1245V2-%288M-Cache-3_40-GHz%29"

My only worry about the processor is that It may not utilize It's full potential, especially since It doesn't look like Minecraft servers are Multi-threaded and I'm unsure what exactly causes Chunk errors, If it doesn't utilize It's full potential It's kind of going to waste, I wanted to make a server with a Core 2 Duo CPU I have lying around but I haven't got around to doing so yet, perhaps go on the Ubuntu forums and maybe they'll give you a run-down on what you need in your system.

Apparantly as of 1.0.1 MC is multi thread. 0_o Maybe my Phenom dosn't know what it's doing...

Also I found out that the 1245 has a built in gpu, better I get the 1240 or the 1230.

This is pretty much what I have decided on:

Fractal Design Define Mini Black Micro ATX Silent PC Computer Case
Antec EarthWatts Green EA-380D Green 380W
SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCL-F-O LGA 1155 Intel C202 Micro ATX Intel Xeon E3 Server Motherboard
Kingston 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 ECC Registered w/ Parity Server Memory Model KVR1333D3Q8R9S/8G x 2 so 16Gb
Intel Xeon E3-1230 V2 Ivy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 69W Quad-Core Server Processor BX80637E31230V2

I will order the parts sometime next week I think. =D
