Should I build a PC identical to sigrig or go with a new setup?

Thread Starter
So here's my dilemma: I love my sigrig, but circumstances have led me to not have access to it probably until next summer (miscommunication with family regarding storage); my two roommates next year are both gamers and the quality of life would be considerably better if I had a desktop. So of course the classic OCN solution is to build a new one! biggrin.gif

What I'm conflicted on is, should I build a desktop just like my sigrig, or should I go with a different motherboard/CPU/RAM setup? My sigrig has been great and I haven't needed any additional performance, but I'm generally uninformed about hardware these days and I would hate to miss a potential opportunity to upgrade. Would be very grateful if someone with more experience could chime in.

*Note: I won't be overclocking. Shocker, I know.

If you've got the money then build a better rig.

I would say hit up a IvyBridge if you want higher stock speed ram, if not SB would be just as good granted you dont get PCIE 3.0 and the native usb 3.0 ports. Which I myself would prefer over having to deal with 3rd party drivers for them. So either 2500k or a 3570k. As they well help make sure your minimum fps dont sag as much.

What is your budget for this rig? I would recommend just getting the best possible rig that you can. I would actually just going used here on OCN. There are a lot of great deals there and you can get the bulk of your components there.

Haha, of course. I'm debating whether it's worth spending an extra $200+ just to get slightly higher performance though, thinking it's probably not worth it. I guess buying used is always an option as VW_TDI_02 suggests.

Alright, I'll see if I can't pick up either of those used, I'll figure out the mobo/ram from there. Thank you sir. smile.gif

Hmm, I'll keep an eye out over the next few weeks for attractive parts then, thanks for the advice. Don't really have a budget, the less I have to spend the sooner I can put it together though, so ideally sub-$700.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that a bit overpriced? Those three components purchased new would be around $520, maybe a bit more. Are highly-overclocked parts highly sought after (would've thought the opposite)?

That was just an example. And often when people are trying to see parts that overclock really well then they charge a bit extra. That doesn't help in your case since you aren't overclocking but I just pulled that link from the first page without really looking into it.
