CPU Overheating

Thread Starter
I wasn't sure where to post this thread but here we go.

I've just built my 1st PC and I have noticed the CPU has been getting hot. Like > 95 Celsius hot. I first noticed this attempting to open up TOverclocker. I also noticed this upon booting up the PC. I have not messed with the BIOS or the TOverclocker as I am very new to this sort of stuff. Right now my CPU cores are running at 45C with no intense programs running i.e. Idle. Any ideas?

System:

BIOSTAR TZ77B LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

SILVERSTONE Strider Essential series ST60F-ES 600W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80

Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Intel Core i5-3550 Ivy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 77W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 2500

Hi and welcome wink.gif
Please explain carefully how exactly you placed the cooler. Maybe it's not making a good contact with the chip. Did you remember to use heatpaste?
Did you connect the fan? And does it turn?

Thanks for responding so fast! The stock heatsink came with heatpaste so I just used that. I placed it on top of the cpu and everything seemed to make good contact. The fan is working correctly, running 2000rpm. I installed coretemp to monitor the cpu and it says it's about 47c right now. However, just a moment ago, I attempted to play tribes ascend and according to coretemp, temp went above 100c and coretemp shut off my pc.

Should I be doing this while it is running? I mean I have the cover off so I could do it, but should I turn it off and try it? Sorry, this seems like a stupid question.

are you using the stock heatsink and fan?
are the pins holding the heatsink and fan onto the motherboard fully all the way throught cause sometimes they might look as thought they are fully throught but they are not

Download CPU-z. Take a screenshot on idle, and take screenshot while running something like SuperPi or wPrime or Prime95.

The bottom two pins on the heatsink didn't seem to be pushed in all the way. I will boot up and try again
