Am I directing my friend in the right direction?

A friend of mine owns a dell inspiron 12200 and wants to make it faster for web and programming use. I told him to get an ide to cf adapter, a 32 gb compact flash card, 1gb of ddr 333mhz ram, and to install ubuntu. Am I sending him in the right direction?

Honestly, with a laptop that old, especially when it was a bargain laptop when it was released, your best bet is to tell him to trash that laptop or sell it for $25 on Craigslist, then invest in a new one. You're going to spend more money than it's worth to upgrade that laptop.
