Computer Room Exhaust

Thread Starter
So my brother is moving into my house and we decided to turn the 3rd bedroom into a dedicated computer room. It's a pretty small room, about 120sq ft and needless to say it gets really hot in there with our PCs running. We are building desk along the length of what is an exterior wall, and I am thinking we can sit both computers beside each other, and put an outdoor exhaust fan in.

We both have positive air flow cases, each with 1 scythe 140mm (92 cfm) exhaust fan + the cpu coolers (1 ZALMAN CNPS9900MAX-B 135mm & 1 Noctua NH-U12P). Then each has 1 gfx card and obviously the psu. I can enclose the rear of the cases together (leaving room between them for side intake), or leave the back of them open, whichever would be more efficient.

I plan on using a small house fan (has to fit between studs) and creating a duct (probably out of insulation board and silicon) to send the air outside. I'm wondering how much CFM I should be shooting for to suck all this air out and through a weather inhibiting vent.

current ideas:

Vornado Fan

+

12x12 Vent

just looking for a little input. whether it's better fan, vent or any ideas at all to help out. i have extra psu connections and i could run a 200mm fan or 2 instead of a small box fan if i can get the cfm necessary out of them to go out through a vent. also trying to keep the cost down where possible, not a deal-breaker but <$100 is ideal.

thanks in advance!

yea i think i started to get away from the bathroom fans because i didn't think they were going to have enough CFM for how much the price started to jump up and a lack of through the wall options. this one seems pretty solid though.

http://www.amazon.com/509S-8-Inch-Through-Wall-Utility-Integral/dp/B0002YTNB6/ref=sr_1_4?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1344442786&sr=1-4&keywords=through+the+wall

do you think 180 CFM should be enough for the 2 PCs? and I'm assuming enclosing the rear of them around this would be best?

Probably.
Keep in mind what goes out must also come in so whatever amount of air you are venting out of room needs to be brought into room from somewhere else.

I would go the window fans myself. I assume you have a window in the outside wall.

yea i've got a window AC unit in there. it's on the 2nd floor, the window is on the east wall. then the computers and desk are going to be on the south wall. i've got 90+ CFM coming out of the back of each computer's main exhaust, plus each one's PSU and GPU blowing out the back as well. then i've got 12 intake fans between the 2 as they are both positive pressure.

honestly i would do whatever you can so it exhausts out the window, duct them somehow if you can and get them to blow out the window, im going to try doing that myself whenever i get a chance

here's the layout. i thought about setting up a duct system and using the window, but sending it right out through a hole in the wall seemed a lot easier. im liking that Broan 180 CFM through-the-wall bathroom exhaust fan linked above. there are a few variations of it, + or - CFM, the next step up is 270 CFM for $130 instead of 70. I'd like to think 180 is enough.

Cheaper and more air with 2 if needed. Put one in and if you need more put in a second one.

Suggest putting the first one close to bottom of desk top. A panel on left an right of computers from computer to wall and floor to desk is all you will need. Probably leave the gap between them open to help balance air to wall exhaust. Cardboard is all you need to use.

great point. and yea i was planning on spray painting some cardboard black or something like that. sounds like a plan though, i appreciate the input.
