It would be naive to think that Samsung and Apple were unaware of what the other was doing during development. Word gets out, rumours spread and industrial espionage is a very real thing that happens all the time. You said it yourself, the two products were released within months of each other. How else do you explain that? Hint: it's not a coincidence. wink.gif

Edit: This: http://allthingsd.com/20120807/samsungs-2010-report-on-how-its-galaxy-would-be-better-if-it-were-more-like-the-iphone/ makes some interesting reading that you should enjoy. It shows that Samsung are constantly comparing their products to the iPhone to find ways to make them more similar. If this document is real, (and it appears to be, as it has been allowed in court), we have proof that Samsung are copying Apple's hardware and software directly and blatantly.

Edit: In words of a Spanish economist, 'In a world where the fastest way to earn money is suing someone, there's something that obviously needs to change'.

I meant it is irrelevant in the court case, which is the topic of this thread. Most people seem to have forgotten that. And for the record, Apple are one of the richest companies in the world, do you honestly think the majority of their profits have come from suing competitors? Don't be stupid. There is no such "blatant proof" "because they cannot come up with anything better to make money", you're just spouting nonsense now. I don't necessarily agree with the way Apple are going about these lawsuits, but according to the law, it's their right to do it. That's all I'm saying.

When it comes down to it, it DOES matter to me that Apple obviously wasn't the first one to use any of these symbols. Just because they're obsessed with patenting and copyrighting every little molecule and pixel of the products they come out with, that doesn't make anything here morally right.
Being right in the eyes of the law doesn't mean you can't hate them for what they're doing. I'm not saying that anyone else wouldn't do the same thing in their shoes, but that's another thing entirely.

You do have to accept it and move on IN THIS CASE, because that's the law at this moment in time. I said you have to accept it, not agree with it. I personally don't agree with it, but that doesn't matter because the law is the law and we are talking about a lawsuit. To clarify, I have only ever been commenting on the legality of their claim, not the morality. And yes, you are allowed to "hate" Apple for what they are doing here, or elsewhere, if that is your opinion. I'm not one to oppress another's opinion or label it as invalid. I just don't appreciate people automatically hating on Apple, or any other company, without being informed first, and that was where my comments were directed.

It's the opposite of being a brand fanboy, and there seems to be a lot of Apple "hateboys" around. It's getting old. Apple is what it is - everyone knows how they operate, so stop all the complaining already. They won't change because you want to have a whinge on your niche forum. People also need to remember that Samsung, Apple and all of the other tech companies are constantly suing each other over trivial copyright infringements. It just seems that Apple is the only one that gets publicly chastized about it in the media.

Just look at Apple's "settings" button and then look at the rest and try not to facepalm. And its not like Apple invented using a gear or cog as a settings button. Other than being gears/cogs, THEY LOOK NOTHING ALIKE.

This is stupid, those iPhone and Samsung icons just have the same colors, and NOTHING ELSE. The settings button is not even the same color. They are out of their minds.

goddamn has gotten so out of hand that it's almost comical now. what will be next- apple suing samsung for blatantly copying, because they already patented the way to copy, and samsung's method was too similar.

I'm literally sick of this crap.

I'm not even hating on Apple, or Samsung.

I mean I'm quite literally sick of hearing about all this crap. Its so old. There are only so many times I can say "but that's ridiculous!" about the same topic in a day/week/month/year before it becomes like an annoying chatty wife that you just ignore when you walk through the door because you already know exactly what she has to say and you're quite sure that none of it is interesting or new in the slightest.

*cry*

First world problems.

Really though, can we have an Apple v Samsung forum?

Part of UI design is designing icons that people will recognize. If Samsung had to completely create a new set of icons that look absolutely nothing like Apple's (i.e. not using a gear for settings) then their UI will be harder to understand. There needs to be some consistency across platforms otherwise users will get very confused if they switch.

Imagine if each manufacturer of automobile had to use a completely different set of images to label the speedometer, engine temperature, oil pressure, etc. because of patent fears. I'd be fine in my Chevy since I'm used to it but I won't know what many of the gauges mean in my sister's Subaru. Sure, the icons are different, but they're similar enough for me to instantly recognize what they mean even though it's a different manufacturer.

Dear OCN Mods,

Is there any way to keep all the Samsung vs Apple threads in a more confined space? I am having a hard time visiting the OCN news section nowadays due to the bloat of Apple-this, samsung-that. I like the information for sure, but the same arguments keep coming up on every one of these threads ... it is disturbing and slightly maddening...

Peace, Love and Robots,
DK.

Honestly shouldn't we be happy the colors are the same? I imagine it would make things easier for icons to be globally recognized. God forbid colors match or icons seem similar to help people understand what things are.

It's almost as if Apple wants people to have to use something obscure just so they can sell "easier to use" products. Distasteful of Apple, really.
