Are alienware computers worth it?

Thread Starter
My friend wants to buy an Alienware desktop...

Overclocking 200mhz costs $150. I seriously laughed so hard when he showed this to me. Sounds like a scam. An i7 oc'd to 4ghz is standard, but to have it oc'd to 4.2 its $150.. really? xD

Are they good? I've seen games like league of legends which have a little sponsor tile at the bottom which says "sponsored by alienware"

Not really worth it.. Read up a little on the forums and put the rig together.

Generally any pre-built "gaming" computer is overpriced. .2 GHz for $150.. that's nuts.

Your friend is much better off building his/her own computer, or even buying a basic desktop with a good processor and then replacing the power supply, adding a graphics card, and adding a solid state drive him/herself to save a bundle of money.

Does your friend live near Microcenter? Instead of getting that .2 GHz OC for $150, your friend should spend $20 more at Microcenter to get an Intel i5-2500K and overclock it to his/her heart's content.

Yeah, Tribes: Ascend recently added that "Sponsored by Alienware" thing, wonder how much money the developers get from sponsorships like that, heh.

PS: Tell your friend Microcenter has amazing CPU+motherboard bundle deals.. for $230 before taxes I got an i5-2500K and a Z68 motherboard, and for $250 before taxes I got my brother an i5-3570K and a Z77 motherboard. As for all the other components, check slickdeals.net on occasion to find graphics card, SSD, computer case, etc., deals from retailers like Newegg and Amazon. I personally buy name-brand RAM on eBay, a 2x4 GB DDR3-1600 kit can be had for $30

Alienware markets itself as being 100% gaming computers, so that's why they advertise and sponsor video game events. As far as the thread goes, you're asking 2 different questions... Are they good? yeah they are good computers. Are they worth it? No way. You'll pay way more money than if you build it yourself and you'll get parts that are outdated most of the time. Plus, like you said, $150 for an OC?? People will pay it because they think it is so hard to do, when in reality, it probably takes them 5 seconds.

The biggest problems with pre built computers is that I feel like they skimp on the important things. They'll advertise a ridiculous amount of HDD space, RAM and Windows 7 Ultimate, but then give you a 560ti and a i5 2500 processor. If you tried to build the same rig yourself, you'd be paying more for your RAM and hard drive then you do for your CPU and GPU...which is absurd.

we could do a build here right now in 5 minutes and still get a better deal...
