Would RAID be worth it for me?

Thread Starter
I'm thinking about creating a RAID 0 on my Western Digital Caviar Black WD7501AALS & Western Digital Caviar Green WD5000AADS. The only thing I really want is the increase in performance that I've heard you get with RAID 0. I know about the pro & cons of 0, and I think it's what I want over 1.

So, would it be worth my while to set up a RAID 0, and reinstall 7? Or, should I just leave it alone.

You'll be wasting that 750 by only using 500GB of it.
And I wouldn't put green type drives in RAID...

I thought RAID 0 merged storage while RAID 1 storage is based on the lowest drive.

Anymore RAID isn't really worthwhile for a performance increase. Raid 1/5/6 are nice for resilience but if you really want performance get an SSD.

In any case RAID works best with identical drives. Combining a green with a black isn't a good idea.

RAID0 total storage = number of drivers * the size of the smallest drive
RAID1 total storage = the size of the smaller of 2 drives

It just limits performance....

RAID performance is determined by the slowest drive (any other other drive has to wait until the slowest drive is done).
Once again...

I've seen green type drives drop out of the array too many times, so there's that too!

If you ALREADY own the two drives, and you don't care about the lost 250GB, then... maybe.

I already had 4 1TB blacks and didn't feel like spending money on another very large SSD. So I threw them in Raid0 and keep everything from Steam on them. It's made a notable difference. So it really depends on what you're going to use it for if it will benefit you or not.

Sounds like it wouldn't be worth it in the end. Since the green would just hinder it. Guess I'll continue to save money for an SSD. Thanks all!thumb.gif
