Which socket mobo, and what type of RAM? I'm guessing 775/DDR2 based on your prices, but please post up the info to be sure.

i'd wait it out for the bearlake platform. who knows, they might be better overclockers than the current chipsets maybe not, we won't know until the reviews come out. This way it'll save you a bit of money in the futureproofing.

How much better overclocking do you want

Depending on your needs, I'd recommend the Asus P5B Deluxe if you don't care for Crossfire/SLI and the Asus P5W DH Deluxe if you do want Crossfire/SLI (although the latter is a bit over budget). Also, the ABIT AW9D is a good board, supporting Crossfire/SLI, and overclocking really well. However, this last board has only one PCI slot.

Regarding RAM, I'd go for the G.Skill DDR2 800 HZ kit.

if a mobo says it supports ddr500 could you make it so that you can have a higher ddr memory? or will this screw the voltages up

First, for the boards mentioned you will need DDR2.

You *could* run the RAM faster than the FSB (For example, FSB is 200MHz, and RAM runs at DDR 500 speeds, which is a 4:5 divider). There will indeed be a small gain in performance.

However, the main advantage of DDR 500 RAM is that you can overclock your FSB quite a bit with RAM at 1:1 before you even hit the stock speed of the RAM. Obviously, you can increase the FSB to 250MHz before DDR 500 runs at stock on a 1:1 divider. And, good DDR 500 RAM can go beyond it's stock speed (I had the G.Skill HZ which would run at DDR 580 speeds - that's an FSB of 290MHz).

The same story goes for DDR2. For a Core 2 Duo rig, I would recommend DDR2 800, or very good DDR2 667 (like the $230 Crucial Ballistix kit).
