Decided to get into water cooling

Thread Starter
I've decided after much thought that I want to get into water cooling. I think I can push my rig harder and keep it cooler under water. My main concern for this was having enough space to put everything. I wanted a dual bay res/pump, but I only have 4 bays and 3 are taken. Then I saw this pic from templeviper:

http://www.overclock.net/content/type/61/id/993153/width/500/height/1000

That got me to thinking: why don't I just build a water cooling box with the major components in it, then run the tubing to my rig? I like the sound of it, so I drew up a quick diagram of what I would want.

WATERLOOP-1.jpg

My question is, does this seem like a decent set up for a loop? I'm not talking about parts or anything, because I haven't got that far yet. Just wanting to know if this would be a good layout for it. WC box would probably be under my tower on the bottom of the table (1 1/2 ft away), though I can sit it next to the rig if it would make a difference. Thanks in advance!

sounds great in many of the applications, but looses some of the ability in all that hose strung
out between the source and and the PC.

if you are keeping it external, you might think about a water chiller. no rads, case fans only
and will only be held back by the efficency of the water blocks.

see this video:

what kinda temps are you having on air-cooling currently? ambient? how much are you looking to
shave off with water-cooling?

I just finished mine. Its possible but in your case I would put 2 pumps in the rad box. I only have 1 on mine but I have 3 more in the chassis.

Ambient is around 26C. Idle for CPU sits around 31C or so. Gets up into the high 60s when gaming. Graphics card sits around 37C at idle (pushing 4 monitors) and goes to around 70C under full load. I'd like to bring the idle down to around the 25 range and keep it under 55 or so under load. Graphics card I'd like to see temps under 60 full load. I know nothing about the water chillers. Is it the same principle? EDIT: Having actually watched the video, that almost seems preferable. I'll have to look into that.

I was thinking if the tubing would be too long I could put it right next to the case and run the tubing through the window (I plan on taking it out at some point). That would minimize the tubing I would need to run by a good bit. If I ran 2 pumps would they be in sequence or one after the res and one on the return?

I'd get a watercool or XSPC dual pump block. But if you want, you can put one on the rad stand and one inside the case.

Decided it was easier to get a single bay fan controller so I can go with the Rasa 750 RS240 kit (better for my space requirements). Now my only question is, is the pump strong enough to add the GPU and a 2nd rad? Get that answered and I have my set up!

Ok, so I think I'll go with these bits (GPU block is going on n ASUS HD 7970 DCii TOP):

http://www.frozencpu.com/products/11743/ex-wat-159/XSPC_Rasa_750_RS240_Universal_CPU_Water_Cooling_Kit_w_Updated_Pump_and_Free_Kill_Coil.html?tl=g30c83s137

http://www.frozencpu.com/products/15664/ex-rad-373/Alphacool_NexXxoS_ST30_Full_Copper_Slim_Profile_Dual_120mm_Radiator.html?tl=g30c95s160#blank

http://www.frozencpu.com/products/15080/ex-blc-1067/XSPC_Razor_HD_7970_Full_Coverage_VGA_Block_-_Reference_Design.html?tl=g30c309s1590

And arrange like so (yellow=rad, red=res/pump, blue=fans, black=mobo, grey=graphics card:

My only fitment concern is the vertical rad, as it will be very close to the graphics card but should clear it with the slim rad (barely). I believe I also have enough clearance at the top to put the rad that comes with the kit on top along with 2 Corsair Air Series SP120 High Performance fans. I would leave the 200s in the top space of the case, just reverse them into intakes. Tubing would go:

res/pump->top rad->cpu->gpu->vertical rad->res/pump

Does this appear to be ok, and if not what needs to be changed?
