[NeoGaf/WGTC] Accept Steam Agreement Or Disable Your Account - Page 17

Steam isn't taking your games away, your games depend on the service you chose to license them to.
They're taking away your access to said service.
Had any of you read the ToS to begin with you'd understand what you're purchasing.
And as I said before
Unless you were planning a lawsuit against Valve, nothing has changed for you as an end user.
Just accept the new terms and move on.

i am buying a license of a game that incidentally requires steam, the license has nothing to do with steam, in fact at activation, the game communicates with the developers/publishers server, not steams.
just like if you buy a license of a movie in itunes, you don't pay for the license to be in itunes.

Really both those separate items are being purchased.

If we to stick to software precedent, your game license would continue on after your steam service has been revoked. You'd be legally allowed to pirate, then?

Of course, I don't think the software companies really support the one copy-one license approach anymore. I imagine the publisher would expect you to rebuy the game.

If that happen I would take them to small claim court and get my money back on all the games I bought. Because that would be a bait and switch. I don't mind paying sub for a mmo, but not a steaming services where you buy games. Unless the games are Free including any new game that comes out when you are sub.

If you don't realize that this is an actual possibility then you shouldn't purchase anymore games on steam or really any of the major digital distribution services. What you say above isn't something new that just came up due to the new TOS it's something that's been a real possibility since the beginning of Steam.

And yes it's their service and they can deny you access to it at anytime, for any reason. It doesn't matter if you can download steam for free, you still agree to their terms of use. And it's still a service.
What is so hard to understand here?

here we go again, i agreed to their old terms of use, then bought a game because i'm happy with the old terms, now they are forcing a new terms of use down in my throath, and if i don't agree with that they will take all the game licenses that i already paid for, why is it so hard for you to understand that this kind of doing is wrong, it doesn't matter if everybody is doing it, doesn'r matter if majority doesn't care, it is wrong!

yes i can just accept the new terms and move on, no big deal, but this is just like microsoft preventing us to boot windows 8 straight to desktop and forcing us to use metro, it only takes one click from metro to desktop but why is this a big deal? why lot's of complaints about this in another thread? because it's not right, forcing us to do something is not right.

The differences with GoG and any other source of DRM free, or DRM that is not dependent on an internet connection (disc checks, etc), is that even if they have the legal right to rescind your license (and they usually don't), they have utterly no way of enforcing compliance.

If my GoG account is were deleted this very second, I would be out nothing, as I have their product already. It would be like issuing a recall on a physical object.

Steam, Origin, GameFly, and so on and so forth, can unilaterally terminate an agreement and prevent you from using what you have purchased much more easily than someone can force their way into my home, overcome the multiple armed adults therein, and destroy my hard drives and optical media.

They don't have to this. They set an ultimatum and most people will accept to keep their games.

What they should do by some opinions, and what makes them the most money, are often not the same.

Also, Rule of Acquisition #1: Once you have their money, you never give it back.

I find this change repugnant as well. These companies add these anti-class action clauses to their agreements to save themselves money, with the supposed replacement solution of arbitration. The problem with arbitration is arbitrators (hired by the companies in question) will not get much repeat business if they side with the customer too often. It is inherently bad for their business to be truly fair and unbiased in other words. This is why arbitration is bad.

It has been long established that a contract cannot sign away rights (well, at least it would be unenforceable). This is another problem with Steam's agreement. Companies tend to put these kinds of restrictions in their agreements to scare customers from taking such actions, which I find offensive. They're treating their customers as the enemy.

It is one thing to have these agreements presented before purchase, but it is ridiculous that they update them afterwards and then deny you access to your paid library of games without compensation should you choose not to accept it.
