[NeoGaf/WGTC] Accept Steam Agreement Or Disable Your Account - Page 22

Just an FYI to everyone. This doesn't hold up in court regardless. So if Steam does end up taking your first born child at some point and you file suit Valve can't magically stop you regardless of what their TOS states. There is numerous examples of TOS's (lol) not holding up in court over the years.

This really is nothing to freak out about.

If they wish to Deactivate my account, they should be allowing you to make a full backup of your games, and have them playable outside of steam. thats Only Fair.

bro you said it the best way possible.

Facts:
Buy game. really buying license to use game. the company can revoke at any time if you like or not. if your good or bad.
Console games are digital but i can trade them in......hmm, PC on steam trade in, nope.
i could keep going but....
Simple fact of the matter. Tech has outpaces the Law. Companies DO what they want. Nobody stops them. Boo hoo.
that's just how it is. if you dont care, good. If you care, do something about it, just dont agree to the new TOS and try to do class action because the thing you just accepted said you can't. Hah.
I think the simplest thing to do if you dont agree would to buy your games on disc.

I feel this thread being locked soon.

well offline mode works just fine IF i have downloaded the game already and IF it is not a lame Windows Live game where i have to sign into them as well.

If this isn't illegal, it should be.

Nothing hostile or "evil" about what Steam did with updating their agreement, they are simply coming in line with common practice. Class Action Lawsuits are bad for the individual consumer anyways, generally you don't get anything of value in return, and some lawyers make a killing in fees. All it does is force a fine against a company which is Not paid back to the consumer. So if you had $1000 in game licences and you participated in a CAL you'd probably get like $10 back and still not have access to your bought games. Not worth your time.

Class Action Lawsuits are simply buzzwords today which get people excited.
If there really is a problem filing a proper complaint with your State District Attorney, and filing a lot of them, is much more effective. You can actually have legal action which favors the individual consumer.

You are so correct. Lots of e-lawyers here. I suspect that Steam updated their TOS to reflect a ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States. The court ruled that a company CAN use a clause that precludes a class action suit and that an arbitration process may be applied..

The decision was rendered April, 2011 and the full wording can be found at Supreme Court Ruling(PDF file)
There is also a write up at Wikipedia

There are a number of other sites that can be found by googling "AT&T Mobility v. Concepcion, No. 09-89"

Game Politics, com has a concise write-up of the impact.

If you are in the U.S., too bad, so sad. The clause is legal and supported by a decision of the supreme court. Outside the US, I suspect the EULA could be contended.

Edit: I am not a lawyer. But I am willing to do a little research.

And in the original ToS, that you agreed to. You said they could.

So again, you have no grounds for complaint.
And again, they're not forcing anything. You either comply with their terms or they deny you their service.

Doesn't everything that requires you to signup for on the internet have some type of user agreement that you need to agree with to be able to use it?
So whats the problem? OCN probably had you check some accept user agreement box and if you don't agree you can't use it....
