Sony Trinitron - Multiscan GDM-W900 - Advice ASAP

Thread Starter
At work with the opportunity to take home the above mentioned monitor - I tried Google it, to no avail - This is the W900 model, and not the FW900 model that everyone seem to talk about.

So before I move this 50 Kg monster of a screen - Should I use it or just toss it ?

I have access to the following manufacturing dates:

July 1999
August 1999
January 2000

Reckon the last one will be the better one.

There is picture on ALL of them.

If you need ANY more information, please let me know - There are a bunch of the monitors - They are all about to get binned so time is precious smile.gif

Test them all for picture quality, see which one is the best, and keep that one. Don't miss your chance, these are the best CRTs around

And take pictures of the monitors off and on, and your setup with them.

Tested them all and the one manufactured January, 2000 is clearly the best - Doubt it have more than 100 hours on it (They are all from an old project at work that never got around - And so they were put away. Only to be discovered last week as there are some maintenance going on).

Snatched that one - Its now standing here at home - hot diggity dog, crispest picture I ever seen - Having some problems regarding resolution and Windows 7. but so far I managed to get it to stick at 1920x1200 @ 85 Hz - Might need an Inf ?

Now I feel sad about the mini-graveyard down at work - Monitors, keyboards and other stuff - Might have to have another look tomorrow and see what I can dig up - The container is due sometime early next week.

So I put my 120Hz LCD monitor next to the GDM-W900.

First of all - I still prefer gaming on the 120Hz monitor - I have to admit that it feels more fluid than on the CRT - Then again, I cannot get the CRT to run at anything above 76 Hz, even though the manual I found states it can run at ~167Hz, I even tried lowering the resolution, no luck - Just gives me the blue notice (Out of range).

That said - The picture quality BLOWS the LCD out of the water - This is my new work monitor, thats for sure. Oh and movie watching ..etc. The difference is just to huge to be able to explain! It even rivals some the highend monitors I use at work, such as the apple display and so on.

Pretty awesome you came across those with minimal use. Too bad I can't find any where I live.

I own a "Dell P1690" though which I believe uses the same tube as the GDM-W900. It can reach those high refresh rates but requires a lower resolution to do so. That's the trade off with CRTs, high refresh rates = blurrier and lower resolution. My Dell also has a scanline issue which I believe requires a G2 voltage tweak with WINDAS (something I haven't touched yet.)

See if your GDM-W900 has a "Service Port" on the back too. My P1690 does, but I have yet to see a guide to using it.

This spec sheet on the P1690 might help give you an idea on what output settings you can use:

Thanks! smile.gif

It was indeed a question about balancing. Now browsing and working in 1920x1200 and playing the odd game, now and then, at 1280x1024 @130Hz! Will try a 1680x1050 later today smile.gif

So many people underestimate CRT technology. In several ways CRT image quality is actually superior to LCD, especially TN panels. Of course the much reduced size, power drain, and weight of the LCD was a big part of why they became the dominate technology.

No they aren't the best CRTs around. The W900 is inferior to a top-end CRT.

The reason why people even these days speak highly of CRTs is that LCDs just haven't been able to compare up to CRT technology in terms of general image quality. CRTs beat IPS on viewing angles, VA on black levels, and TNs in terms of speed by a massive margin. Not only are CRTs better at these things, the fact that you have to choose your poison with LCDs makes CRTs seem even better. These things will improve if we move on to OLED but until then we're stuck with a technology that is more convenient but just vastly inferior for most aspects of IQ (major expection being text unless you don't run the CRT at a mediocre resolution and have it well focused, still important enough to note).

Wow - If the W900 is inferior I cant even imagine the quality on the FW900 - I am absolutely blown away by the quality and speed of the W900.
And I work on a 27" Apple Cinema at work and have a 120Hz for gaming - Neither of them stand a chance against the W900.

I aint some "Fan boy" - Last time I used a CRT was .... 10 years back ? But coming from LED/LCD and to CRT, yesterday, made me a firm believer - And I did not spend a single dime on it smile.gif

EDIT: Found 4 x FW900 biggrin.gif - Will test them and report back!

Keep in mind that the quality of CRTs declines and varies more with age and usage and them not being taken care of properly than LCDs, which means that one FW900 might appear much worse than another. (If it looks good and has no obvious issues on short usage, it'll not be vastly different from a better condition counterpart, as most FW900s today are not unused and properly kept and thus have some wear and tear and won't be as good as they would have been back then). If you acquire one, enjoy it, as it is truly a gem of the monitor industry.
