You'd think with the prices on solid state at the moment, these devices could support better storage

The Asus also has micro HDMI out which makes it really simple to connect directly to a tv. You can do that with an ipad but you have to buy the $50 dongle in order to do so.

Being told by people I should get an ultrabook over a tablet. I have my sig rig in my room, and so I don't really need a laptop as anything that requires me to type excessively, or to require some real CPU power, I would be sitting properly in a chair rather than in bed with a laptop/ultrabook

As far as expanding the storage using an SD card goes, would I just be better off getting the lowest capacity TF700 and just putting a card in it?

Yeah, you can get a 32GB TF700 and then use one or both of the available card slots provided that you buy the keyboard dock as well. Take note though that some are having issues with mounting SD cards higher than 32GB, which probably stems from the firmware.

I still would like to see the prices, but would there be any negative points to using SD storage over the onboard storage? Not only the speed, but would the interface be different between the storage option?

Kind of hard to explain what I mean, but in windows, the different storage media is all shown together in the my computer window. But in start menu, the shortcuts are all pooled together, regardless of their actual install location

Will this work in the same way in android, or will I have to go to a different 'area' to access apps and media on a different storage media? Really sound stupid trying to explain that, as I have only used andriod on a mobile

There is no difference whether you are using internal or external SD. You simply navigate to the ext_SDcard folder instead of having everything readily available if you are using a file browser. If you're using a music or movie player app, it has the option to auto scan for relevant files anyways!

Do beware of the drama surrounding rebranded TF201 docks being sold//bundled with the TF700 though.

Sweet, the music part makes sense, but I wonder if I can just link to apps stored on the external storage to folders etc

Hopefully there will be demonstration models in shops etc I can have a look at

Android's file manager can sort through all files, whether they're in internal storage or external SD. They show up as different drives, but can be accessed by apps such as music players all the same. Most do prompt you to navigate to the folders these apps will scan anyway, and then only refuse to play back the file if it has been moved or deleted.

And apps can be moved to SD, should you want to clear more of the internal memory. Be careful though as some apps lose functionality when transferred to external storage, like widgets. Some developers remedy this by publishing separate widget downloads that link to the main app.
