Tri-fire cooling suggestions?

Hey all,

I made a poor choice a while back to get non reference cards(MSI Twin Frozr III 6950x3), and now I am having a big problem. With my motherboard layout, the three cards are basically sitting on eachother. I have a straw inbetween them so that the fans don't hit anything or get jammed, but they are not getting any air and are overheating nonstop. At this point, they idle around 60c, and full load in 3dmark or kombustor the top 2 cards go to 85-95c. Bottom card seem's to stay between 65-70, because it has airflow unrestricted with nothing under it but a high performance 140mm fan. I'm at work so I can't take a picture right now, so enjoy this MSPAINT rendition of my situation! (Try not to laugh at my drawing skills)

coolingsetup.jpg

I was hoping that I could set CCC to use the bottom card as main, so the monitors could run off that and hopefully reduce some of the heat on the upper cards, but I can't seem to get it to work. When I plug all 3 monitors into the bottom card, they just get no signal. Also, my bottom lane is only 8x. Would it be an issue, to have 3 monitors coming out of the bottom 8x lane performance wise, versus the top 2 x16 lanes? I have a Rampage III Formula MB if that helps.

Because the intake for the top 2 cards is blocked, and they are non reference, so I can't get a full cover waterblock, I don't know what to do. Suggestions?

thanks in advance!

EDIT: Added picture!

Im honestly not sure if you can select your 3rd card as your main I believe most motherboards are prioritized by slot order period , Im wondering what you could honestly do to get a decent cooling without spending Triple Digit numbers.

Without spending money on waterblocks, or after market coolers, your only real option is keep two straws running along the very outside long edge opposite to the PIC slot and strap a high static pressure fan to the side opposite to the expansion slots (towards front of your case) and have it blow air right in between the cards.

I would have to say it might be worth looking in to some dual-slot after-market air coolers.  Water-cooling would be very pricey for a tri-fire setup.

My previous setup was a single gpu, water cooled with a swiftech universal vga block. I still have the universal block and the VRAM/VRM heatsinks. The problem being, and I tried this, the swiftech block is too large to fit in the tight space between cards. Not only that, but if i did manage to do it, finding a hose to not cringe while making that "U" shape so close to itself is another issue. I really should have thought about water cooling before I bought all this equipment.

Tri-fire on air is a horrible solution, i think I may have to buy a second swiftech universal vga cooler and just run 2 cards on water. Maybe sell the third or keep it as a backup, since MSI is now refunding 6950 RMA's rather than replace/repair. Its a tough choice, that's for sure.

I have no problem doing watercooling, the problem is that these Twin Frozr III cards are non-reference and there aren't any full cover waterblocks for them.

Are you looking for a massive overclock out of these?  If not you could always just do 3 universal blocks and VRM/RAM heatsinks.
