New gaming build ideas?

Thread Starter
I'm new to this forum but decided to jump right in, sorry I initially posted in the wrong thread and sorry if this is the wrong one as well

Price: $2000-$2500

Purpose: Gaming, Multi-tasking, File compression and decompression, Folding

Already have: Mouse, Keyboard, Speakers, OS, Ram, External drives and PSU, miniDP to DVI active adapter, DP to DVI active adapter

-I'm looking for a build that will run 2560x1440 or 5760x1080 with ease

-I want to stay away from watercooling if I can, as I don't want to waste my system with a hose breaking. I also want to stay away from Thermaltake due to poor quality.

-I'd like the build to be future proof as much as possible as well

-I'm looking to play games such as Crysis, Max Payne 3, Metro 2033, Skyrim with mods

-I will use the i5 in my current build if there isn't much performance gain with Ivy Bridge(Not sure if PCIE 3.0 makes a difference).

-I'm also skeptical on the Yamakasi monitors but will go with one if they have good performance and will last about as long as other brand name monitors

-I have no preference over ATI or NVIDIA for a graphics card, have only heard that crossfire scales better and 7970 is better at multi-monitor

The build I'm looking at is: http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=17786871

-I will make any changes to it if there are options with better performace

Monitor: YAMAKASI-CATLEAP-2703-LED-27-2560X1440-WQHD-IPS or 2 more HP 2711x

Thanks for your time

Hey man I'd save your money and not buy a new cpu/mobo, your i5 2500k will last you till haswell easily and stay away from the ocz agility series go for vertex 3 or 4 or look at the Samsung 830 or crucial m4.

May I ask why you feel the need to upgrade right now?

And have you checked out the crossover 27q Korean monitor? I own one and like it way better then the catleap

First off thanks for the response, and what's the best i5 motherboard as my current one won't cut it for crossfire/sli? I'm looking to upgrade within the next couple months and because I'm not content with the performance and am looking to run at higher resolutions. What's the fastest of those SSD's (performance/price)? No I haven't looked at the crossover monitor does it have a good success rate, and how long have you had it, has there been any issues? Thanks again.

If you're upgrading platforms (especially with a $2k+ budget) I definitely wouldn't "upgrade" from 1155 to another 1155. That 3770k you picked out is the EOL chip for 1155, Intel is done with it.

If you have that kind of money to drop, look at the SB-E chips on 2011. The 3930k would probably be perfect for you, and will give you the option for a drop-in upgrade to IB-E in the next couple years.

Well there are a few, I'm a loyal asus mobo fan so can recommend the maximus formula/extreme or gigabyte g1 sniper, or even the asrock boards, your fine with any z68 boards but if you set on wanted the lastest stuff go for the z77 chipset your not gunna see much difference compared to the z68 having a sandybridge.

Um right now the fastest is the new ocz vertex4 ssd's, I have a 128gb and love it, others don't really like ozc because of past history but they came along way and I'd recommend it anyday, but crucial and Samsung have solid ssds to and everyone seems to favor them, I'm on my phone right now so I can pull up links takes to long but for the 128gb ssds the Samsung 830 and vertex4 have the most bang for you buck right now.. not to sure on the current prices on the 256gb ssds yet haven't looked.

Lately in the crossover threads alot of people been ordering the non perfect pixel monitors and have been arriving with zero dead pixels, the frame is really nice mad of metal and the stands are very solid, Google them or check the ocn thread on them plenty of info if your interested!

Why upgrade at all with the 2500k, overclock that to 4.5ghz or higher and it will easily last till haswell which will be a much better upgrade then changing this Gen, when there is no real reason to...

Before you buy a new 7970 for ur 27" ips, try out your 6950 and see the performance you get, it be perfectly fine, and then you can upgrade when the hd8000/gtx700 serious comes out! Hell you could even save your money and buy the hd7990 when it comes out and not have to worry about a new mobo for sli/xfire

Thanks, I may stick with the i5, but don't necessarily want to buy a new board and have to upgrade again a few months after. The main reason I'm looking for a new board and or cpu is in order to have better overclocking room and Sata III. I haven't tried the 6950 with one of those monitors but don't know that it will give me ultra settings with AA and what not at decent frames at that resolution. As a side note I've also considered going to the (green side), how is the gtx690? Can it run a modded Skyrim without Vram issues? Have you run into it being bottle necked by Vram before? Is PhysX worth it and how is power consumption and noise?

I haven't tried the 6950 with one of those monitors but don't know that it will give me ultra settings with AA and what not at decent frames at that resolution. As a side note I've also considered going to the (green side), how is the gtx690? Can it run a modded Skyrim without Vram issues? Have you run into it being bottle necked by Vram before? Is PhysX worth it and how is power consumption and noise?

690 sure has the horsepower but lacks in Vram, As you say the 7970 3gb or 6gb versions would be best for 2560+ resolutions.

2gb gtx 680 is still a great card, But i would say skyrim with mods would push you very near or just over that amount of vram

If you have that kind of money to drop, look at the SB-E chips on 2011. The 3930k would probably be perfect for you, and will give you the option for a drop-in upgrade to IB-E in the next couple years.

Thanks for the response, and I'm not necessarily looking to just drop money for no reason I just want something that will still be running strong a couple years down the road. I have considered the 3930k, is the hexacore ever used when gaming? Also does this cpu have PCIE 3.0 support?
