2gb gtx 680 is still a great card, But i would say skyrim with mods would push you very near or just over that amount of vram

Thank you, would a 4gb 680 be a better option then or does memory bandwidth become an issue? I also read some posts about better Vram management with Nvidia( not sure if this is true) if so does this prevent going over? I'm also somewhat concerned about heat, noise, support and power draw and not sure if 7970x2, 680x2, or 690 would be better in this regard while still keeping performance.

A 4gb 680 would be a great choice for 2560+ resolutions. A 7970 only has a few fps advantage due to memory bandwidth in some games, Not that you would notice the small difference.

I agree the nvidia control panel and drivers are more user friendly overall. gtx 680 sli will not draw more than 550w system watts from the wall 100% cpu and gpu load.

the new generation gtx cards run very cool and the non reference models run almost silent. I cannot physically hear my gigabyte 670 while running 3dmark11

I've never run into vram problems and I play every game on Max with AA on full which isn't even need for 1440p anyways, I haven't installed my skyrim yet, to busy finishing my other games, but in anygame like crysis/crysis 2, bf3, etc I get 100fps+ without turboboost kicking in. And all you guys get sucked into this always needing more vram lol

Just for the record the reason amd cards have more vram then nvidea cards is because in the exact same game with the same settings a and card uses more vram then a nvidea card.

*but put enough mods on skyrim I'm sure you could Max vram on any amount of vram, but so far Ive never run into vram problems .

A gtx690 is about 6-8% worse in performance compared to gtx680sli which is really good but the 690 uses less power, runs cooler, and only takes up one pci-e slot, you can't even hear the 690s fan @100% thats how quiet it is.

Thanks again and sorry for so many questions just want to only have to do this once. Is the difference in a 4gb 670OC sli and 4gb 680OC sli pretty negligent(~5fps or less) or is there enough of a performance difference (10fps+) to justify the price increase. Also will a Corsair 750w PSU Bronze rating give enough room for overclocking with either?

670 sli is best bang for buck, The extra cost of the 680's really isn't justified, the extra $200 or so could be better spent elsewhere in your rig

A 750W corsair unit would be plentiful and allow overclocking on the cpu and gpu's if you were to go sli / crossfire

So I think I may have decided on either a 670sli or a 690 if I can get one on ebay for a decent price, but what do you think about the rest of the build?

I'm looking for aircooling so will the NZXT Switch 810 with a Noctua NH-D14 for cpu work for that?

Will the ASUS SABERTOOTH Z77 LGA 1155 Intel be a good motherboard for the gtx 690 or an sli setup and will my i5-2500k suffice when overclocked?

Is the Crossover monitor the best (price/performance) 2560x1440?

Is 8gb of Corsair Vengence 1600Mhz ram enough or do I need 12-16gb or ram with faster clocks?

If you have any better recommendations for those I'd appreciate it. Thanks for all the responses and help as well.

I would start with a single 4GB GTX 670 and if you do not get enough FPS, add a second. You should only need a quality 650W PSU for SLI as well. Keep your current CPU, I am not positive on your board, but does your second PCI slot run at x4 or x8? If it's x4, you are going to need a new mobo for SLI. redface.gif

You could put a 690 in your current mobo though.... you will be VRAM limited if you go with a 3x monitor setup.... Should be ok for 1440p.

Being a 680 owner could you give me a ballpark on the performance drop I would get opting for a 670(as in fps not so much percentages)? It's a x4 =/, would it in turn be more cost effective to stick with my current motherboard and go with a gtx 690 than it would be 670sli + motherboard?

The sabertooth z77 is a really good board!

The crossover/ catleap / shimian are all the same monitor but there casing and stands are different, so look at all three and pick which one you like visually!

8gb of ram is more then enough, I have 8gb @ 1600mhz and have never even come close to maxing it out.

Seeing my performance on my 690 its is a bit overkill on 1440p, like others have stated you can get a gtx670 4gb and run it perfectly on the 1440p monitor and sli later if need be if you want to save money.. but the 690 is just so sexy hahaha
